"Once the door had been opened, it was up to you to go through it and prosper."
O'Shea Jackson Jr., Ice Cube's child, is the latest to speak up following Vulture's notorious "Year of the Nepo Baby” article. The actor was 31 years old when he made his screen debut as his father in the biopic "Straight Outta Compton".
Jackson Jr., like many "nepo baby", attributed his success to having a strong work ethic. Jackson Jr. opened up about his breakthrough role and said that it was his father’s dream for his son to "play him" on the drama of 2015. When the first rumblings about the project began to be approved, O'Shea was already in college at USC for screenwriting.
"I accepted the challenge. He insisted that he auditioned for the role for two years. "After that, it was up to you. My father couldn't keep my hand throughout my career. It was up to me to make it work.
He stated that his career was built from the roles he chose. My work ethic. Professionalism on promo tours and sets. I even left HIS agency to start my own team.
He continued, "Once the door had been opened, it was up to you to walk through it and prosper."
Jackson Jr. emphasized his work ethic, passion and hard work but he also acknowledged that his path to success was paved by the privileges he was given.
He said that "NONE" would have been possible without the love of his father and "the effort [Ice Cube] put into getting [his children] to a position of opportunity."
It would be disrespectful and foolish for me to ignore it or refuse to accept his guidance. He acknowledged that he was grateful for his teachings and uses them daily, but he also pointed out that nepotism "has been around for centuries."
O'Shea stated that nepotism should not be viewed as a threat to your "empire," but rather as a way to create one.
He encouraged others to "generational talent/wealth" and said that they should not allow anyone to tell you that your achievements are inferior or bad.
"I want everyone to be able offer opportunities for their children's success. It doesn't matter how small or large. It's something that all parents strive for," the actor from "Long Shot" continued. How many people do you know who work multiple jobs to send their children to school? Parents should strive to create opportunities.
He said, "Family first." This is a plea to everyone to read it and to help their family walk the path of success. Teach them to love their family. To love their families. To love their family and pave the way to the next.
