Patrick Stewart Admits He Was 'a Severe Bastard' in Early Star Trek: TNG Days

"I didn’t like being laughed at." The classically-trained actor confesses to his new book that he stormed out of the set, into his trailer and slammed the door.

Patrick Stewartrecalls his difficult beginnings on Star Trek The Next Generation.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, in his new memoir, Making it So, the actor recalls the differences between his acting style and behavior on set with his co-stars, such as Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner.

Stewart was irritated by his co-stars when they used improv, or teased the actor. One time this was enough for him to storm out.

Stewart said, "I'm a serious bastard."

In his book, he writes: "My experiences with the Royal Shakespeare Company as well as the National Theatre were intense and serious."

"On the TNGset, I became angry at the behavior of my peers. I then called a meeting where I lectured the cast about having fun and replied to Denise Crosby’s comment, ‘We've gotta have some fun occasionally, Patrick’ by saying, ‘We aren't here, Denise. We're not here to have fun.’"

Stewart said that everyone, including him, now finds the story humorous. However, at the time, he wasn't so impressed.

Stewart continued, "But I did not handle it well in the moment when the cast erupted into hysterics over my pompous statement."

"I didn't like being laughed at. He revealed that he stormed out of the set, into his trailer and slammed the door.

Stewart revealed that Frakes, Spiner and others came to comfort him. They told him that he had "misjudged the situation" and that people "respect you."

He and Jonathan both agreed that there was too much joking around, and it needed to be toned down. They also pointed out that it was not an example of good leadership for me to lecture and scold the cast to resolve the issue.

I had not read the room and imposed RSC on people who were used to episodic television, which is what we were filming.

Stewart starred in Star Trek The Next Generation from 1987 to 1994 as Captain Jean-Luc Picard, and reprised his role in 2020 for Star Trek Picard.
