Pedro Pascal Blasts 'Butthurt' Color-Blind Casting Critics, Teases 'More Leeway' in Last of Us Season 2

Pedro Pascal Blasts 'Butthurt' Color-Blind Casting Critics, Teases 'More Leeway' in Last of Us Season 2

Pedro Pascal, star of "The Last of Us", "The Mandalorian", and "The Last of Us: The Mandalorian", discusses the importance of diversity in casting and being a positive role model for Latino youth, as well as the possibility that Season 2 of the undead drama will diverge even further from its source material.

Pedro Pascal has been lauded as one of the best actors in recent years. He's appeared in two of television's most popular genre shows, and even became a Zaddy in the last two years. But the actor doesn't take it for granted.

The star of "The Mandalorian",, and "The Last of Us",, is proud to serve as a role model or inspiration for those aspiring to succeed in Hollywood. This includes Latinos, LGBTQIA+, and those who've been working in the industry for years.

When Pascal was asked by Variety why he struggles to accept compliments about his work, he said that despite not wanting to get an "A", he wants to be able to "fulfill the assignment" and understand someone's vision, as well as being a partner on a set.

He added, "If you want to inspire someone else." "Maybe this is the compliment I refuse to acknowledge." It can make me feel like my heart is about to explode.

The Emmys could bring him recognition for his quality work and inspire more Latino performers. He has two lead roles, the "Mandalorian", and the "Last of Us" as well as a guest comedy actor on "Saturday Night Live". "

If he wins a prize for one of his leading performances, Pascal will be the first Latino to do so since Jimmy Smits won it in 1995-1999 for "NYPD Blue". He would also become the second Latino ever to win this award, after Smits.

Pascal's work in the small screen has received praise, but one of his genre films has also been the victim of the cry that its casting was colorblind. His own Joel is not white, unlike his video game counterpart in "The Last of Us", and his daughter Sarah has been portrayed by Black actress Nico Parker.

The colorblind casting of Halle Bailey in "The Little Mermaid", Rege-Jean Page as "Bridgerton" or the cast of "Hamilton" has been a cause of even more outrage. Pascal believes that all of these "butthurt critics" just need to move on.

He told Variety that he believes the change to be important, and that casting someone into a role which doesn't limit a character by racial identity is the best way to keep representation going. "Especially if the IP or book is one we know."

It's the way Shonda Rhimes, who also used color-binding for Grey's Anatomy,, filled Bridgerton with diversity. And it's the way Steve Toussaint became Corlys Velaryon in House of the Dragon,, and Idris Elba played Roland Deschain, in "The Dark Tower." But the less said about this abomination of film

Who cares? "People get so upset about this type of stuff but who cares?" Pascal wondered. "Because it's the coolest thing to do is be open about the casting on every level."

The actor gave fans some hope that the storyline would be tweaked a bit more when "The Last of Us", Season 2, returns. Many fans hope that the adaptation of the second, much larger game in the videogame franchise will not be too loyal.

Pascal teased, "I don’t know." "I think Part Two has more flexibility."

He said that the game was a "different immersive experience". It seems that the story is more open, even though certain things have to happen. This means I don't know."

It may not be possible to change certain narrative threads as the story develops. The WGA strike is currently delaying scripted TV, so it's unclear when Pascal will return to HBO's The Last of Us Season 2 or Disney+'s The Mandalorian Season 4. But you can bet that fans will wait breathlessly for his return.
