Pete Davidson Opens Up About PTSD, Self Harm and Suggestion He Talks About 'Dead Dad All the Time'

"Whether it's right, wrong, or both, it still f---s a child up," Davidson said about the way he learned that his father had died on 9/11 during an interview with Jon Bernthal.

Pete Davidson still struggles to feel happiness after learning how to deal with the impact 9/11's loss of his father had on his mental health.

Jon Bernthal interviewed the former "Saturday Night Live” star to discuss his desire to become an actor. This led to a deeper discussion with the "Walking Dead” alum about his experiences with PTSD, self harm, and borderline personality disorder.

He said that he compared his prior perception to people who think he is always talking about his deceased dad. Scott Davidson was Davidson's father. Pete was seven years old at the time. Scott was a firefighter.

"It's almost like I made 2 jokes on my dad within a period of 15 years. He explained that it was a mistake to act like this and make me feel bad about myself. "I try to tell little jokes about him here and there because I want to keep that memory alive. My dad was a great man. "I get defensive. That's my family."

He explained that he is "getting better" at understanding that he cannot please everyone and fix all misconceptions. He can only control "who you surround yourself with, who loves and who loves back", adding that he now has "people around him that love me and that's strange and that's an entirely new thing." Davidson stated that he has felt for many years that "the walls will close in on me or something's gonna get ripped out."

He stated that there are obvious reasons why he feels this way. He also mentioned that he has been doing trauma therapy and addressing PTSD since childhood. Davidson said that he and his therapist both agreed that a lot stemmed from the fact his father had "told" him he would pick him up on 9/11, and then the worst.

"I was picked up by my mother. For three days, she didn't tell my mom what was happening. She kept telling me that dad was at work and I didn't know. He recalled that my mom was like, "You're just grounded, and you're not allowed watch TV." "I was like, What? I didn't do any of that. I turned on the TV one night and saw my father on television. They say, "These are all the dead firemen."

He described it as a very "weird time" for his family who hadn't known for weeks if their father was alive or dead.

"There was hope," Davidson said, pointing out his mother was only 30 years old at the time. "I would not know what the f---t to do. He said that nobody knew the best way to handle it. "Regardless of whether it's right, or wrong, it still f---s up a kid up."

Pete Davidson Felt Like 'Loser' When SNL Mocked His Dating Life

Bernthal was told by Davidson that he has PTSD and borderline personality disorder. He also struggles with fear of abandonment.

He continued, "Dad claims he's going pick you up, but he doesn’t," and he said that he didn't believe him. "I went from a traumatic life to [...] high-school traumatic life because Hollywood's like highschool."

Davidson stated that he has been working on his trust issues and also found ways to overcome his self-harm, something he has done since childhood.

"I liked to cut, until about a year ago. I used to bang on walls my head. He told Bernthal that if I couldn’t handle something, if someone said something that was sad or unpalatable to me, I would bang on the walls hoping that I would pass out.

These feelings diminish over time with skills learned from dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT). He suggested that you can take cold showers, listen to your favorite music and do "anything else" to help you feel the urge to self harm. He said that "most of the time that feeling goes away within 15-20 minutes." However, he added that "I had to learn that even if one thing is not going right, it doesn't necessarily mean that the ship sinks."
