Police say that Froiland's wife was returning from a shopping trip at 4:30 PM. Her husband then accosted her and held her against a wall asking where she had been all day.

The man then locked their 10-year old son in a dog box, ripped off the leg of a wooden rocking chair and started beating his wife. After loosing control, she was able run free, grabbed her phone and fled the house, calling for help.

Tippecanoe Chief Sheriff Terry Ruley stated that the victim was covered in welts and bruises when officers arrived at neutral locations away from her home.

Froiland was charged with domestic battery, intimidation and interference in reporting a crime. He also faced criminal confinement charges. Froiland was released later on $500 bond and given a non-contact order for ten days.

Froiland was employed at Purdue University as a Clinical Assistant Professor since August 2017. Officials confirmed that he had been placed on administrative leave. He has been banned from returning the campus.

According to his university profile Froiland's expertise is "parental autonomy, relatedness support and parent involvement from preschool through high school, teacher/student relationships and intrinsic motivation to learn. Student engagement, happiness and positive psychology interventions."

He has created an intervention that supports autonomy, parent-child communication and positive emotions towards learning. This helps elementary school students to be intrinsically motivated to learn. He also created a positive psychology program that encourages college students to develop lifetime gratitude and positive emotions towards learning.

Froiland is the author of dozens of papers and journal articles on positive psychology and often gives interviews to media about the subject.

After learning about the allegations, the students of Purdue Exponent told them they were "Irritated", angry, and disgusted."

Ala Samarapungavan, a fellow professor, told the outlet that none of us could have foreseen something like this. "If we had seen anything, we would have reported that immediately."

"He has been working here for many years. Helen Patrick, another professor, said that this was unexpected. "Nothing gave me the slightest pause to wonder."
