While he is the reigning monarch of England, King Charles III still reigns supreme in fashion sustainability. We can all learn from the king's practical and sustainable approach to fashion, which is well-known for his "make do and fix" mentality.

The King of Fashion: "I Can't Bear Any Waste"

The king is not content to say reduce, reuse, recycle. His Majesty actually practices what he preaches. The sustainable king is well-known for his commitment to the environment and shared his thoughts with British Vogue about why he struggles to get rid of clothes.

Charles said, "I would rather have them maintained, even patched, than to leave them." Charles said, "The problem is that as you age, your body changes and it becomes more difficult to wear the clothes." The king said, "I can't bear any waste." "I would rather find another use."

The king also rewears vintage threads, including a 40-year-old morning suit. The Anderson & Sheppard suit has been worn several times by the king, including at Meghan Markle's and Prince Harry’s 2018 wedding.

The king was asked if he thought about wearing a new piece of clothing to the wedding. "But in that particular morning coat," His Majesty stated, "as long I can get into it, I only use it a few times per year, in summer, so obviously you want those kinds of things to go." If I don't feel comfortable in them, I have to get something else made.

The king doesn’t need to be worried about fitting into his old clothes. The monarch was actually seen in a 40-year-old overcoat, a longline tweed double-breasted tweed coat. The vintage coat was instantly recognized by royal fans.

The king does his best to reuse pieces as much as possible but he also has some very expensive, well-made clothes. The monarch will have these and all other pieces of his wardrobe maintained by tailors or cobblers.

The king stated, "I happen be one of those people who would get shoes (or any other item of clothing) repaired if possible, rather than throwing it away."

This is a great reminder that in today's disposable society, repairing and rewearing clothes are part sustainability!
