Queen Elizabeth’s Royal Title Before Her Coronation Hasn’t Been Used Since, But That Could Change Soon

Queen Elizabeth smiles in blue dress

It is hard to recall a time when Queen Elizabeth was the title of queen. However, before she assumed the throne, the late monarch held a title that was removed from circulation during her reign. Some believe that this might change in the near future.

The Queen was formerly known as The Duchess of Edinburgh

Before becoming queen, Queen Elizabeth was the Duchess and Duke of Edinburgh. From 1947 to 1952, she held the title. Only four people have held the title: Princess Augusta from Saxe-Gotha; Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna; then-Princess Elizabeth; and Camilla Parker Bowles.

For a few reasons, the title has been mostly out of fashion. The title was no longer used by the queen once she was elevated to the throne. However, Prince Philip was still known as Duke of Edinburgh.

His title passed to King Charles III in 2021 after Philip died. Charles, who was at that time the Prince of Wales, did not use the title. Although Parker Bowles was technically the Duchess and Duke of Edinburgh at that time, he did not use this title.

Who will be Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh?

After he ascends to the throne King Charles will likely pass the title as Duke of Edinburgh to Prince Edward. The Duchess would be his wife, Sophie, Countess from Wessex.

Edward and Sophie may not be the only royals to receive new titles. It is expected that Prince Harry's and Meghan Markle’s children, Archie, and Lilibet will be given the titles of Prince or Princess.

Archie and Lilibet might be receiving prince and princess titles

This tradition dates back to 1917, when King George V was in power. The children and grandchildren of the monarch can claim the title of prince or princess, according to tradition. Although they may soon be called Princess Lilibet and Prince Archie, others believe that the children won't receive HRH status.

This is because Harry and Markle decided to leave the royal family in 2020 and to stop performing their duties and move to California. Both Markle and Harry have publicly criticized the royal family. However, Markle allegedly stated that she would like both of her children to be able to hold royal titles. This would give them extra security.

Many are wondering what the future holds for King Charles, who is now settling in to his position as ruler after the death of Queen Elizabeth. Many members of the royal family may be shifting their titles or taking up new positions.
