Harper's Bazaar quoted the Hello Sunshine founder as saying, "I'm not traumatized by it or anything else. But it was formative."
Reese Witherspoon reveals that she did not enjoy filming the 1996 psychosexual thriller , Fear.
She was 19 when she shot the scene in a theme park featuring a woman orgasming on a rollercoaster. Both were at the beginning of their careers.
The 47-year old woman, who spoke with Harper's Bazaar recalled the process of creating the final product, mentioning her discomfort.
It helped me to understand my place in the pecking-order of filmmaking
Witherspoon said to Harper’s that she did not have any control over the situation. She also told the publication that a stunt double was requested.
It wasn't explicitly stated in the script, so I believe the director came up with that idea on his own. He then asked me if I'd do it on the set, and I declined. She said, "It wasn't an especially great experience."
She added, "It was formative. I'm not traumatized by it at all." It helped me to understand my place in the filmmaking pecking-order. It's one of those stories which made me want be a change agent and to have a leadership role to tell stories with a female gaze instead of a male gaze.
TooFab reached out to the representative of director James Foley in order to get a comment.
Witherspoon's desire to become a change agent has been realized. In 2016, she founded Hello Sunshine as a way for women to "tell their stories in their words."
The birth of the production company coincided with #MeToo's rise. Witherspoon disclosed in 2017 that she had been sexually assaulted at the age of 16 by a director. The actress was also a major fundraiser for Time's Up.
Hello Sunshine also proved how lucrative it can be to tell stories centered around women. Candle Media bought the company in 2021 for $900 million.
While Witherspoon's career has been dedicated to empowering women and telling their stories, she confessed to Harper’s earlier in her life that she was less far-sighted.
"Oh, my god, I wanted Romeo + Juliet to be so bad, so badly."
Before , Legally Blonde, the star could be "very competitive, jealous of other women, and not supportive" when she was in her late teens or early twenties.
Witherspoon said, "I wasn't seeing the abundance of opportunities."
She revealed that she "went really hard" to get two major roles from the time, but ultimately did not receive them: Clueless and Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo & Juliet.
She said, "Oh my god, I wanted to do Romeo and Juliet so bad, so badly." Claire Danes is amazing but I was devastated that after several screen tests, and being so close, I did not get the role.
Witherspoon said that part of the problem was systemic, and she felt as if "only one girl would make it."
Sometimes I look back at my past and wonder, "How in the world did I do it?"
She asked herself: "Who would I like my daughter to look up to?" I want to be someone she looks up too. "I worked hard on it."
This was the turning point.
"I created Tracy Flick and ended up in Pleasantville. It was incredible." Ava asked me about my characters like Tracy Flick and Elle Woods from Sweet Home Alabama. All of these characters were created in the five to six years I spent in my 20s. Sometimes I look back at my past and wonder, "How in the world did I manage to do that?"
