"I love and cherish you... "I love you buddy," Lowe told his son after Barrymore had praised the family's support.
Drew Barrymore, John Owen Lowe's son, Rob Lowe, and John Owen Lowe shared their sobriety stories during a touching moment on Thursday's Talk Show.
Barrymore gave a brief praise to the Lowes at one point of the hour for their "support each other through incredible things" as a family. She then revealed some details about how open she is with her daughters about her alcoholism struggles.
She shared that she was honest with her younger siblings. "They know my story. They know I can't drink. It's not for them. It doesn't work." They know my pitfalls, and they support me through all the highs and lows.
Rob said, "We do and we can share recovery." "I am 33 years into recovery. Johnny has five years of recovery. In fact, Johnny was born on Saturday. Johnny, I would like to give you your five-year chip.
Rob reached into his pocket and pulled out the chip. He then presented it to his son, telling him that he loved him and was proud of him. John Owen, 28 years old, was shocked by the gesture and hugged his father before saying, "That is so sweet." Speechless. I have a funny retort that I can use, but I don't usually have one. It was very kind of you.
Rob, 59 has shared his personal journey to sobriety. The actor of "9-1-1: Lone Star" struggled with addiction after he became famous as part Hollywood's Brat pack with films like "The Outsiders" in 1983 and "St. Elmo’s Fire" in 1985.
He attributes his 1989 sex tape scandal to "one of the reasons I got sober."
John Owen, his father for Men's Health, said that he has had many times where he could have lost his life due to his addiction in a joint interview earlier this month.
He admitted that he enjoyed pushing the limits of his body and trying to numb as much as possible. "There is a certain amount of self-doubt or discomfort with oneself. I became more anxious and used medication more frequently. I have been to numerous hospitals. "I've been extremely lucky."
He later credited his parents for helping to get sober.
"When I was at the lowest point of my life, my parents threw their lifeline to recovery at me in such a way that it was almost like I was going to die. It's abrasive. It was like I was in a coma and they were hitting me with the liferaft. He explained that my feelings were that it didn't matter and that a lot of that was due to having the father that I had. "Once I was treated like my voice and opinion was valid, I was able access the part of me that was scared/hidden. The thing that finally worked was when they said, "We love you, but we are scared."
Rob, his father, said, "I have a slightly other--not different but additional perspective. He wasn't ready to give the keys to us. He believes that he woke up one day and did it. We should have done it sooner. There was a good reason. He wasn't ready."
Netflix's "Unstable", a Netflix series featuring the pair, is available now.
