"Pure imagination for this director"

Russell Crowe flatly denied that a story about a trainwreck of auditions from years ago was being circulated.

Director P.J. told the disputed story. Hogan claimed that in "From Hollywood with Love: The Rise, Fall, and Rise Again of Romantic Comedy", a book by Scott Meslow, Mr. Crowe met Julia Roberts in an extremely bizarre setting.

Vulture published a portion of Hogan's story in February. This article focused on Hogan's casting for 1997's rom-com "My Best Friend's Wedding", particularly Roberts' love interest, which was ultimately cast to Dermot Mulroney.

Hogan states in the book: "My first choice was Russell Crowe."

He said, "Russell was, in my opinion, probably the greatest actor I've ever seen." Russell would be a big star, I knew that.

But Julia had cast approval. Julia did not approve of the film and no one would be allowed to participate." The director stated.

They proceeded with a table read by Hogan: "I don’t know what went wrong."

"It was one the worst table readings I have ever seen. Russell sat opposite Julia. He grasped the script and stared at it. Julia was not even a glance away. Hogan stated that he read each line in a monotone. Julia was actually leaning over the table at one point, looking at Russell's face , trying to make eye contact. He didn't even look at Julia. Russell came up to me at the end of the reading and said that he thought it went well. Then, I realized that Russell wasn't going to be at My Best Friend’s Wedding.

Crowe posted to Twitter on Friday: "Pure imagination for this director." I didn't audition for this movie. I have never had a table read with the mentioned actress."

"Gladiator," the "Gladiator", star denied that it had ever happened and added, "Would have been funny if so pointless."
