After negotiations were suspended, studios stated that "it's clear that the gap is too wide between the AMPTP & SAG-AFTRA, and the conversations are not moving us in a positive direction."
The SAG-AFTRA Strike AgainstThe Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers will continue after Wednesday night's suspension of negotiations between the guild and studios and streamers.
In a Wednesday evening press release , the AMPTP said, "Negotiations have been suspended between the AMPTP & SAG-AFTRA after SAG-AFTRA's most recent proposal was presented on October 11." The AMPTP announced the news in a press release on Wednesday night, saying, "Negotiations between the AMPTP & SAG-AFTRA have been suspended after SAG-AFTRA presented its most recent proposal on October 11.
SAG-AFTRA released a long statement on Thursday morning. In it, they retaliated against the studios who "walked away" after the negotiations. They accused the AMPTP using "bully tactic" and "putting forth misleading information to try to fool" their members.
The union stated in the above statement that it was "with profound disappointment" that they reported the industry CEOs had walked away from bargaining after refusing our latest offer. "We have been negotiating with them in good-faith, despite the shocking fact that they made an offer last week that was worth less than what they had proposed before the strike started."
SAG-AFTRA claims that studios "refuse" to protect actors from being replaced by AI. They also refuse to raise wages to keep pace with inflation and refuse to share even a small portion of the enormous revenue generated by YOUR work.
We have responded in a big and meaningful way, including by completely changing our revenue-sharing proposal. This would cost companies less than 57c per subscriber every year. The message went on to say that "they have rejected our offers and refused counter," before criticizing the AMPTP's "bully tactics."
The union stated that "[the studios] deliberately misrepresented the cost of this proposal to the media -- overstating it 60 percent," The studios have done the exact same thing with AI. They claim to protect performers' consent but continue to require 'consent" on the first day for the use of the digital replica of the performer for an entire cinematic world (or franchise projects).
SAG-AFTRA, referring to the WGA strike that ended earlier this month, said: "The companies use the same failed strategy as they tried to inflict upon the WGA - putting out false information in an effort to trick our members into abandoning their solidarity and putting pressure our negotiators. Our members, like writers, are not fooled.
The union said that "we feel the pain that these companies have caused to our members and everyone else in this industry" before stressing its refusal to back down.
We have too much sacrificed to give in to their greed and stonewalling. "We are united and ready to bargain today, tomorrow and every day," continued the message. "Our resolve remains unwavering." Join us at picketlines and solidarity events across the country to make your voice heard. One day longer. One day stronger. "As long as it takes."
After five days of negotiation, the latest round of discussions came to an end. SAG-AFTRA is on strike since the middle of July.
The Hollywood Reporter reported that the AMPTP specifically highlighted SAG-AFTRA’s proposal for streaming revenue in its statement. It claimed that casts getting a share of streaming revenue was "an unsustainable economic burden" which would cost over $800 million per year.
THR reported that sources told them the union's proposals are a major sticking point for the AMPTP.
