Sarah Jessica Parker On How Robert Downey Jr. Relationship Made Her Angry and Embarrassed

The Sex and the City star said that people would dismiss her if they knew about their 1980s romance.

The actress opens up about her seven-year romance with Robert Downey Jr., which lasted nearly 40 years.

SJP recalled the wild times she had with RDJ during his peak of addiction and stardom in an interview with .

They met in 1984, while they were co-starring as teenagers in the teen thriller First Born. The film was shot in New York City and New Jersey. In the early stages of their relationship, both were trying to make it in the entertainment business. Parker was cast in '80s hits (such as Footloose), while RDJ struggled to find success on Saturday Night Live.

Parker told The New Yorker that Downey Jr. struggled with substance abuse throughout their relationship. She said that she never drank or did drugs and was often in a caring role, feeling like a parent at 22 years old.

Parker remembered: "People would dismiss me, but I gave him stability and created a steady pulse that allowed him show up on schedule." "That made be angry and embarrassed."

RDJ's rep told the publication, on his behalf, that he had always "great respect" towards Parker.

They split up in 1991.

Downey Jr. went on to achieve even greater heights before his addiction problems brought it all crashing down. He resurrected a career after a stint behind bars. His success continued with Iron Man, and the subsequent films in the MCU.

He married Susan Downey, in 2005.

SJP dated John F. Kennedy Jr. following RDJ, and went on to marry Matthew Broderick. She shot to fame in Sex and The City. This led to two films and the spin-off series And Just Like That.
