School Bus Driver Won't Be Charged for Drinking White Claw on Job – Didn't Know It Was Alcoholic

School Bus Driver Won't Be Charged for Drinking White Claw on Job – Didn't Know It Was Alcoholic

After being caught driving home students while drinking alcohol, the 60-year old woman who is currently undergoing chemotherapy pleaded, "It was only a mistake. It was a mishap."

Police in Long Island believe a school bus driver who claims she did not know she had been drinking alcohol while driving students to high school.

Amal Hanna claimed that she was unable tell the difference between hard seltzer and carbonated beverages due to side effects from her cancer chemotherapy treatment.

Hanna told News 12 Long Island that she has given up alcohol because of her cancer treatment. She also noted that one side effect makes it impossible for her to tell if a drink is alcoholic.

Hanna admitted that she drank alcohol while driving high school students to their homes on Wednesday, last week, after taking one of her roommate’s White Claws out of the shared refrigerator.

Hanna, who was fired, told News 12: "It was only a mistake. It was a mishap."

How will people who don't drink alcohol like me know that this is alcohol? Hanna spoke. "I've been crying for so long, I don’t have any more tears."

She expressed her fear of being homeless, saying to News 12 through tears: "I'm afraid I'm going be on the streets because of a wrong."

Hanna said to the outlet, "I love the children and I love my company."

She explained, "I'm so happy when I go to school in the morning. I see the children, greet them, ask how they are, and give them a big grin." "[It] is a joy to see children happy as they go to school."

A parent told a local news outlet Hanna was "sweet", and that she couldn't imagine her ever doing anything to hurt them. I believe it was an honest mistake.

Mark Secaur, Superintendent of Smithtown Central Schools District, said that Hanna "was immediately removed from the bus and a new driver completed the route." She was fired from her 15-year job. Secaur wrote to parents that the district had "zero tolerance" for such behavior.

Hanna was not charged by the local police because they believed her version of events.
