The self-described Doomsday Preparer reflects on the trauma of his upbringing. He recalls a time when his father was homeless during his parents' divorce and what lies ahead for him as he prepares for his second child.

Josh Duhamel Is ready for anything

In a recent interview with the in Depth With Graham Bensinger Podcast the 50-year old actor showed off his North Dakota estate -- a lakeside property that is ready for a doomsday. It includes water wells and tractors as well as food plots.

In the interview, Duhamel also discusses the 21-year gap between him and wife Audra Mari, as well as his difficult childhood, including a time when his father was homeless due to his parents' divorce.

TooFab breaks down Duhamel's 5 most important revelations below.

His doomsday preparation was inspired by a novel from 1999

Duhamel is a self-proclaimed doomsday prepper, but his obsession with the subject was inspired by a novel published in 1999. Duhamel's book, Patriots: Surviving The Coming Collapse was inspired by James Wesley Rawles guide. It allowed him and his family the ability to survive any shortage.

Duhamel said to the in Depth presenter, "Part of living out here is that I fear having to move here and live on the land." "I don't think that will ever happen, but it is something I want to learn."

He added, "We live in an extremely delicate society. If we lose our phones, we are all going to lose our goddamned minds." The novel was instrumental in creating his North Dakota oasis.

Duhamel wanted to have a property that could be self-sustaining in the event of a crash on the market, which would make fuel or food temporarily unavailable.

Duhamel: "I wanted to have a place where I could go until everything gets back to normal. Who knows if it will ever happen but it is fun." It's fun to pretend that it will happen.

Audra Duhamel, Duhamel’s wife, is considered to be the "mature one" in their relationship, despite a 21-year gap.

Age is not a factor in Duhamel and Audra's marriage. Audra revealed that she was initially concerned about the age difference when she started dating Duhamel five years ago. But she has now moved past it. In fact, Audra considers herself to be the more "mature" partner in the relationship, despite the 21-year gap.

It was funny when we started dating. I remember thinking 'Wow that's quite a few years', and all of my friends said 'Wow that's quite a few years.' "Are you sure? The pageant queen remembered.

Audra responded that age is just one number when asked by Duhamel about her current position on the age gap between her and her husband since they got married last year. She does, however, consider her husband "immature", given his age.

She corrected herself. "How about young in heart?" Duhamel offered. For me, staying curious is key. "Staying playful."

Duhamel is about to become a father for the second. He had his first baby with Fergie just 10 years before, and he is ready to do it all over again.

On their wedding day, he was put in a wheel chair

The couple, who are expecting their child together, described their wild wedding day -- including a moment when their age difference really showed as Duhamel tweaked back while dancing in the party bus before their big day.

"I tried doing a gymnast - those rings they use in gymnastics, and how they can straighten themselves out. Duhamel remembered that when he tried to pull himself up, his back made a cracking sound.

It wasn't. Duhamel claimed that he was unable to stand or get up on the wedding day.

Duhamel received a steroid injection and pain medication that allowed him the dance and celebrate the occasion.

After the wedding, Audra joked, "Is this what you imagined the day you got married?" Wheeling me to hospital?"

Duhamel never felt comfortable with the fame that he received after marrying Fergie

Duhamel was married to Fergie from 2009 to 2017, but he said that despite the attention, he had never gotten used to it.

"I don’t think I was ever comfortable with everything." He admitted that it was a lot. "I missed the simplicity of my true self."

Duhamel continued, "I am not a guy that is comfortable with red carpets and doing Hollywood stuff. I don't hate it. It's better than it was before, but I still took a while to feel comfortable.

Duhamel attributed the ending of their relationship simply to growing apart and having differing interests. They have a good relationship, he said, particularly when it comes to their co-parenting son Axl.

Duhamel explained, "We had both divorced parents who were not on good terms and we didn't want to do that to our child." "We knew that whatever differences we may have had, we needed to work through them and set a good example for Axl... We both had examples of what we should not do."

Duhamel's dad lived in his car after his divorce with his mother

Duhamel, while recalling some of his funnier childhood moments, such as farting and pooping in the face of his sister, also reflected on some of his darker memories, such as a time when his father became homeless after his divorce with Duhamel's mom.

"Mom & dad divorced when I'm in fourth grade." Both struggled for a long time, but are now doing well. But it was a tough divorce," the Shotgun Wedding actress remembered.

His dad lived in his car while his mother worked three jobs just to get by.

"He never made me feel that he was in bad shape, but I did wonder at one point, 'Why is all of Dad's clothing on the back seat of his car on a rack'? Duhamel recalled the moment when he realized his father was homeless.

Duhamel, who called him a tough guy in the midst of his parents' bitter divorce, said that he and his sister were willing to spend time with him no matter where his dad lived.

Duhamel faced his own struggles in Hollywood as a young actor, being broke and couch-surfing until he was successful.

"I was broke. Duhamel remembered his early Hollywood days as one of the darkest times of his life. "I had no money...for a couple of months, I lived on a couch," he said.

He decided to focus on acting and landed roles on soap operas, before breaking through Hollywood's film scene.
