Sia Reveals Autism Spectrum Diagnosis 2 Years After Backlash Over Film About Autism

Two years ago, the singer received backlash for casting Maddie Ziegler as a non-verbal autistic in her film, "Music".

Sia revealed that she only discovered late in her life that she was on the autism spectrum.

During a recent interview on "Rob Has a Podcast", she noted that, while navigating sobriety, she is also neurodivergent.

She said, "I am on the spectrum and in recovery. There are a lot things."

Sia stated, "For 45 Years, I've been like... 'I have to put on my human suit'." "And only the last two year have I been able to be myself fully."

She didn't disclose when exactly she was diagnosed.

Sia said, "Nobody will ever love or know you if you are full of secrets and... living in shame." Sia continued, "Nobody can ever know and love you when you're filled with secrets and... living in shame."

Sia received criticism two years ago for casting Maddie Ziegler as a nonverbal, autistic person, despite the fact that she is neurotypical. The film also faced criticism for its portrayal of people with autism.

The artist said that "her heart has always been in a good place" at the time and asked the public to "watch my movie before you judge it."

Later, she apologized and added a disclaimer to the film that read: "Music" in no way endorses or recommends restraints on autistic individuals. Autistic occupational therapists who specialize in sensory processing can be consulted for safe ways to provide deep-pressure feedback and proprioceptive feedback to help prevent meltdowns.

Sia said in a New York Times article last year that she had become "suicidal, relapsed, and went to rehab" as a result the constant backlash against the film.

She credits the comedian for helping her recover with a strategically planned dinner date.

Griffin invited Sia to a Hollywood restaurant a few months after the backlash. But it wasn't about sharing good food and company. Griffin was aware that paparazzi were likely to be present at the hotspot, so she wanted to create a more positive media buzz.

Griffin, said Sia, "She saved my Life."
