'Sinister' Nurse Who Murdered 7 Babies in Neonatal Ward Has No Known Motive

'Sinister' Nurse Who Murdered 7 Babies in Neonatal Ward Has No Known Motive

The sympathy card that she sent to bereaved parents was entitled "Your loved one will always be remembered with smiles."

The British nurse who murdered seven infants, and attempted to kill six more children has been found guilty. However, prosecutors claim they have yet to find a motive.

Lucy Letby has been found guilty of committing the crimes between 2015 and 2016 in the neonatal ward of Countess of Chester Hospital, Chester, England.

Manchester Crown Court heard disturbing testimonies throughout the trial, describing methods and gruesome details regarding the murders. However, the Crown Prosecution Service remains puzzled about one of the most important details of the case.

Investigators determined that the baby killer preferred to use lethal air injection. They claimed it was one of her "favorite ways of trying to kill or kill children in this particular case."

The investigation is still plagued by the question as to why the 33 year old committed these crimes.

Before this week's decision, Detective Chief Inspector Paul Hughes explained to People the perplexing issue at the core of this case.

Hughes said, "Ultimately the only person who can answer this question in terms of why is Lucy Letby." "As with any investigation, we follow the evidence, not speculate on motive, so when motive is found, it doesn't take up a lot of our resources because it's about the evidence."

The inspector replied, "Unfortunately, I don't believe we'll know until she tells us." "I don't believe anything was gained from the interviews."

A November 2020 interview between Letby and an investigative officer was shared at the trial. She explained the reason she photographed the sympathy letter that she sent to the parents of a victim who had died. The letter of condolence was sent in 2015, a few months after the infant had died (referred to as Child I in the trial).

The nurse was quoted as saying, "It's nice to think about the kind words I shared with this family."

The court was shown a sympathy card with the title "Your loved one will always be remembered as a person who made you smile."

The note started with "There are no easy words to help you through this difficult time." It was an honor to take care of [Child 1] and to get to know your family, a family that always put [Child 1] first and who did everything they could for her. She will be a part of your life forever and we won't forget her.

"Thinking about you today and forever." Letby signed off the note with "Lots of love Lucy x" and expressed regret for not being able attend the funeral.

During the trial the jury was told that Post-It Notes had been found in Letby's home. These notes contained mixed messages regarding the murders. She claimed to be "evil" for "killing them on purpose", while others claimed she was innocent.

Inspector Hughes is convinced that the evidence will be enough to prove a "sinister brain" was responsible for the crimes.

When you hear the evidence, you'll realize how fragile these babies really are. It doesn't even take much to make someone with a malicious mind act in such an environment. "I believe that anyone can create the chance to harm themselves," he said.

Letby said in May that she did not intend to harm anyone while working on the neonatal unit.

The prosecution urged the jury a month later, when they made their closing argument, to "put together all the pieces of jigsaw" in order to create their own "cumulative image."
