The Schindler's List director stated that he has not witnessed such hatred "since Germany in 1930s", while appearing on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert
Steven Spielberg comments on the "surprising rise" of antisemitism.
The "Schindler’s List" director expressed his concerns during an appearance on Stephen Colbert's "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert."
Spielberg said, "I find it very very surprising." Antisemitism is something that has always existed. It's been either just around the corner, slightly out of sight, but always there. Or it's been much more obvious like in Germany in '30s. Since Germany in the 1930s, I have not seen antisemitism standing proud, with hands on their hips, like Hitler or Mussolini. This is something I have never seen in my life, particularly in this country.
Spielberg observed, "Somehow the marginalization of people that don't belong to some kind of a major race is something that has been creeping up upon us for years and decades."
He said, "Somehow, in 2014, 2015 and 2016, hate became a type of membership to a club which has gotten more people than I ever thought possible in America." "Hate and antisemitism are inseparable; they can't be separated."
The legendary director said, "Without painting an naive portrait about myself," and he countervailed by turning to Anne Frank as inspiration. She was correct to say that most people are good. She stated that she saw goodness in all people. "I believe that at the core of us, there is goodness as well as empathy."
