David's first words were, "I bought hearing aids." Steve ended up using that phrase to describe his aging.
David Eigenberg's character Steve's loss of hearing in the revival of "Sex and the City", "And Just Like That", was inspired by the actor’s real life condition.
Julie Rottenberg, Elisa Zuritsk and Elisa Zuitsk spoke out to Vanity Fair about Steve's limited hearing. This is in contrast to Eigenberg's current reality as an older person.
David Eigenberg said that when Michael Patrick King (showrunner) reconnected with David Eigenberg, the first thing David said was "I got hearing aids." Zuritsky explained to the publication that it was exactly what he led with. "That ended up being Steve's tone [in the show] about his aging."
Some "Sex and the City," diehard fans are unhappy about Steve's new role in the revival series and the diminution of his character as Miranda, Miranda's cheater. Miranda was unhappy with their relationship and she has lost all satisfaction.
Zuritsky stated that nobody behind the scenes was intentionally hostile to Eigenberg's character, and instead said, "Everyone on TV, every single person, love David Eigenberg as human being." He is an actor we love. We love Steve. We love Steve and are very invested in his Steve-ness. He is so full of life and all the Steves are great guys."
Rottenberg said that Miranda's story was important because it showed "another reality" which many people experience -- the reevaluations of life and transitions.
After failing attempts to improve their marriage, Miranda reveals that she has cheated on Steve. In episode 7, Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda's best friend, tells Carrie Bradshaw that she tried to revive her sex life with Steve "the other day" and adds, "I'm afraid, the patient is not responsive."
Rottenberg said that grown couples can become apart and that people have epiphanies about their spouse's worth. "Miranda was a great example of the path many women choose to follow."
Zuritsky said, "We didn’t set out to create virtuous characters necessarily." Even loved ones have crises. Even moral and generally great people can make bad choices. They do them because they are going through something or they are working through a crisis.
