Survivor Player Removed After Gnarly Head Injury, Before Two More Medical Incidents

Survivor Player Removed After Gnarly Head Injury, Before Two More Medical Incidents

Bruce Perreault ripped his forehead open just seconds after the first challenge. Then, one contestant flew off a rock formation while another almost collapsed from dehydration.

The castaways of Season 44 of "Survivor," got off to a rough start. One contestant was removed from the game, while two others needed medical attention.

Bruce Perreault smashed his forehead against the wooden beam that he was supposed be wriggling underneath, just seconds after completing the first challenge. He was briefly dazed when he saw blood pouring from the wound after the crash. He persevered and finished his task, despite the fact that more blood was coming out of his wounds.

Below is a video of the accident

Jeff Probst, host, kept checking on Bruce. He said that he was fine...until he wasn’t. Probst called emergency medical help when he fell to the ground. He was able to get some oxygen and returned to the camp of his tribe. Later that evening, he stated that his head was "killing him" and he seemed a little out of control. He called the medical team once more. He was then removed from the game so that he could be treated and tested at the hospital.

Probst confirmed that Perreault would be invited back to the show in a future season on the "Survivor" podcast.

Bruce was not the only injury that evening. Matthew Grinstead Mayle fell while trying to climb a high rock formation in the waters. He was thrown to the ground below by the rocks as he climbed up them. "I need a doctor!" He exclaimed, before popping the dislocated shoulder back in. Then he showed off his sliced hands and feet.

Later, he was given a sling and sat through the immunity challenge.

Below, you can see his frightening fall.

Matthew's tribemate Brandon Cottom sought medical attention during the immunity challenge.

Matthew and Brandon were exhausted on Day 1, when they had to carry coconuts back-and-forth on the beach for four hours. Brandon had to also do the heavy lifting the next day as part of an immunity challenge. He was tasked with lifting a heavy box out of the water and over a series of obstacles.

Probst exclaimed, “Brandon's got fumes...it is a very hot Day in Fiji.” Cottom succumbed to heat exhaustion and overexertion. Before he could get up, he collapsed and told Jeff that he didn't know how to get up.

The challenge was stopped and medical personnel arrived to provide assistance. He was believed to be "just very dry," so they gave him fluids and some shade. He did not participate in the remainder of the challenge, which his tribe lost.

Both Matthew and Brandon ended up on the injured's list. However, neither was sent home by their tribe at tribal council. Brandon saved himself by using an immunity idol that he had found earlier in the day. This would have cancelled the votes against Brandon and sent him home. Instead, his tribe-mate Maddy was eliminated.

"Survivor” airs Wednesdays at CBS.
