Six firefighters were present at the scene when the house exploded. Amazingly, no one was killed.
Online footage of body camera footage taken at a home explosion that killed a number of firefighters and police officers last month has been made public.
The incident occurred in Pompton Lakes (New Jersey) on January 14, when an officer on routine patrol saw smoke coming from the house. The fire department arrived at the scene and dispatched six volunteers to assist in investigating.
This video shows one firefighter entering a house just seconds before it explodes, and then becoming engulfed by flames. Below is footage that shows multiple angles of the incident.
John Keating, Pompton Lakes fire official (via CBS), stated that two firefighters were "blown out" of their station right next to the door. The explosion occurred as two other firefighters and a lieutenant were inside the basement.
Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center treated two firefighters who suffered severe burns. Official press release stated that four other firefighters suffered minor injuries and declined further medical treatment. These volunteer firefighters are owed a debt for their bravery and courage. We are grateful for what they do every day.
Pompton Lakes Police Department posted a Facebook post Monday thanking all the first responders for their bravery in responding to the explosion. We are forever grateful that there weren't any fatalities.
Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the explosion.
