Bill Murray is a familiar figure to many of us from his time on Saturday Night Live. He also played memorable roles in films like Groundhog Day and Ghostbusters. He is a great comedian, dramatic actor, and writer who has been remembered for his many achievements over the years.
Murray's marriages, however? These marriages have been less celebrated than his professional achievements. We know that Murray had a turbulent marital relationship, particularly at the end. Which of his wives were they? Which of his relationships is he currently in?
Bill Murray was married to Margaret Kelly from 1981 to 1996
They were married in Las Vegas on January 25, 1981. A second ceremony was held in Chicago for their families. The couple has two sons, Homer (the father) and Luke (the mother). Kelly was married to Murray. She reportedly worked in real estate and started a home goods business. They have two sons, Homer (the husband) and Luke (the wife). After he was accused of having an affair with Jennifer Butler, Murray and Kelly split in 1996.
Kelly is currently not available, but it is known that their sons are successful. Homer is a well-known Brooklyn restaurant owner, while Luke works as an assistant basketball coach at the University of Louisville.
In 1997, he got married for the second time.
Jennifer Butler was a costume design specialist. Her achievements include designing the costumes for several well-known films, including Mutiny on the Bounty and The Last of the Mohicans. Murray was filming Scrooged when she met Murray. Butler also did costume design.
Murray and Butler were married in 1997. They had four children: Caleb Jackson, Jackson, Cooper and Lincoln. Butler filed for divorce on May 2008. Murray made a series of serious allegations against Butler that ended their marriage.
An archived web record of the South Carolina newspaper The Post and Courier shows that Murray was accused by Butler of adultery and drug addiction. He also claimed physical abuse and abandonment.
The Daily Mail gave more context to Butler’s serious claims. She claimed that Murray had hit her in the face in November 2007. He claimed Butler said that he was "lucky" that he didn’t kill her. She also claimed Murray was unfaithful and addicted to alcohol, sex and marijuana.
Butler applied for a restraining or order, claiming that Murray's out-of-control behavior forced her and her four sons to leave their South Carolina home. It's not clear whether the restraining order was ever granted and Butler's claims were never verified or disproven.
The couple's divorce was finalized in the following month. John McDougall was the lawyer representing Murray. He stated, "I can tell that Bill Murray is deeply disturbed by the end of his marriage with Jennifer." They are still loving parents and committed to their children's best interests.
Unfortunately, Butler died in January 2021. There was no cause of death.
Murray has other priorities than marriage
Murray, now 72 years old, was interviewed on The Howard Stern Show October 8, 2014. He spoke in depth about his childhood, his early days as a caddy, and his experiences with the vast and varied cast of SNL. In response to Stern's question,he also discussed his regret at not finding his ideal partner.
Murray said that his priority was "taking care [of the things] he really needs[s] most." So, for him, taking care of his children is more important than dating. Murray stated that he wants to feel more connected to himself before he can be truly connected to someone else.
Murray places a high priority on being a loving dad and being present for his six children. Stern was the first to tell him that he got a cell phone for texting with his children.
Murray's marriages have not been the most successful. But he doesn't want to dwell on that fact. He is more focused on his family.
