Kelly Crump, a model, made headlines when she showed her scar from her mastectomy in a Sports Illustratedswimsuit shoot. Recently, the model opened up about her decision to show her scar in a swimsuit shoot for Sports Illustrated and what she hopes women should know about breast cancer.

Breast Cancer Diagnosis 'Shocked Crump'

Crump was diagnosed five years ago with breast cancer after she discovered a lump in her breast. Crump had felt tired but believed it was due to her high-stress job. Crump saw a breast surgeon who diagnosed Crump with stage 3 breast carcinoma a few days later.

"All I have seen in movies is people walking to breast cancer raise money or someone balding, older and dying in a hospital. Crump clarified that this is not always the case. "Most people think of breast cancer in one way. But I was shocked to learn that there are many subtypes and types. It can also be found elsewhere in the body, and can cause serious complications.

Crump was always unhappy with her body image. She felt like she had "lost everything". Crump lost 40 pounds and lost her hair. She quickly realized that things were changing for the better. She shared that "no one notices your stretch marks, cellulite or the size of your pores during cancer treatment."

Her "Sports Illustrated" Shoot Showed Her Scars

Crump was encouraged by a friend to apply for the role of guest model in Sports Illustrated. However, she was uncertain about her chances. Would a 43-year-old cancer patient be considered as a model by the magazine? She applied anyway--"What did I have to lose and soon was on her way to Dominican Republic to be one of 13 finalists.

Crump is shown in a swimsuit in blue with zigzagging cutouts in Sports Illustrated. Crump's left breast was exposed by one of the cutouts. This was also where her mastectomy scar was visible. Crump was anxious about the photo and felt a moment of doubt about exposing her scar.

Messages from fellow survivors - Keep Me Going

She quickly realized the power of the image and shared it with her social network followers. Crump was overwhelmed by messages from other women with mastectomy scars, which let her know that her decision to display her scar was well worth it.

She shared that "these messages and comments are what keeps me going every day." Crump continues to post her online breast cancer journey and hopes to inspire others to take control of their health and educate. People around the globe have been inspired by Crump's dedication to sharing every aspect of her breast cancer journey.
