We grew up riding bikes as a family. Two-wheeled transportation was our norm. We rode to school, to the park and, if we felt particularly brave, up the hill past the graveyard.
The vehicle that allowed us to have our childhood freedoms could be the one that will take us to our final resting place. Here are the reasons a French company operates on pedal-powered hearses.
Eco-friendly Funerals on the Rise
Green burials are becoming more popular and eco-friendly funerals are on the rise. Isabelle Plumereau hopes that pedal power will help reduce the industry's carbon footprint.

Plumereau is the owner and operator of The Sky and the Earth in Paris, a funeral home. She thought it was smart to create cargo bikes that could carry coffins as more people opt for green funerals.
The Corbicyclette, which mashes the French words for hearse--corbillard, and bicycle--bicyclette--has electrical assistance to maneuver steep inclines.

Plumereau stated in a Euronews Article that "The Corbicyclette" is to offer a new ritual for families I accompany, especially at cemetery. The Corbicylette is a silent, slow, and quiet procession to the beat of the footsteps of those who follow the procession.
Green is the New Black
Plumereau suggests that while black clothing might be symbolic of mourning and some mourners may find comfort in wearing green.
"It is important for me to support the families and give them meaning through the ceremony. But also by showing them beauty. She said beauty is what brings comfort.

Bicycle-drawn hearses are a great option for mourners who want a more solemn procession. Similar pedal hearses can be found in the United States and Paris with the Corbicyclette.
