The Office Star Leslie David Baker Refunds Crowdfunded Money for Spinoff, Provides Update

The Office Star Leslie David Baker Refunds Crowdfunded Money for Spinoff, Provides Update

The actor who became famous as the curmudgeonly Stanley in The Office turned to Kickstarter with hopes of launching a spin-off called Uncle Stan.

Some of the money that fans paid for a spinoff of Office will be returned to them, but Leslie David Baker's proposed vehicle -- Stanley for you and me -- may just die. Or maybe not!

Baker and his partner Sardar Khan developed Uncle Stanley. The series stars the beloved curmudgeon who starred in the smash hit sitcom. It is still incredibly popular ten years later on streaming platforms.

In 2020, the pair created a Kickstarter for a proposed sequel series in which Stanley Hudson would retire from his position as a salesman at Dunder Mifflin to enjoy retirement in Florida. The hook was then that he would get a phone call from his nephew Lucky asking for help in his failing motorcycle/flower store in LA.

Baker and Khan provided a new update and explained it was the first one in a long time. While the project reached its $300,000 target by raising $336.450.53 they were only able refund $110,629.81. There's a reason!

According to their explanation on Insta, they reached their goal but "a large percentage of pledges from backers were either lowered or dropped completely and never collected after the campaign had been completed." The lower amount is what they are refunding.

In an update to both Kickstarter Indiegogo and the two companies said that they were "in constant contact" with their supporters and were fulfilling all rewards while also refunding any money received.

All those who have already received their rewards can expect a full refund. They did not provide Indiegogo figures but promised all backers of that platform would also receive refunds.

The update does not say that the project has died. The IG on Baker's Facebook page appears to suggest that they still hope to move forward. One of the reasons for the delays was the COVID-19 Pandemic 2020. The dual WGA/SAG-AFTRA strike has halted the process again.

This update reads: "We've been working hard behind the scenes to make sure that everything is on track and rewards are fulfilled." We are as eager as you all to release this project and we truly appreciate your patience and support.

The update doesn't explain what they plan to do after returning all the money they have received from their fans. Or if they are going to reach out to them again at a future date.

/Film noted that some fans were skeptical from the start, pointing out the fact that Baker and Khan do not own the character Stanley Hudson as "The Office" is owned by NBC. "Stanley's Nickels", which will be launched in 2021, has only increased skepticism.

Baker and Khan may have explained the reason why refunds won't reach the total amount, but this discrepancy in numbers could very well reinforce that narrative that this is not legitimate. According to their explanation, those who donated should receive a full refund of the amount they contributed.
