Grace Kelly and Princess Diana have left strikingly similar legacy. Both were quite young when they were invited into the royal life. Both were loved by their people and both were tragically killed in car accidents.

It seems that they only met once, despite their many similarities. Kelly died in 1982. According to the tapes Diana provided for Andrew Morton’s biography Diana - In Her Own Words she met Kelly in 1981 at a Goldsmiths' Hall musical recital, just before Charles was married.

"It was a horrible occasion... Everything was all over the place at the time. That evening is so vivid in my memory. I was scared--nearly sick" Diana recalled Kelly telling her to relax and that it would only get worse.

Kelly, who was 52 years old, died in the same year. Kelly's unorthodox connection to Diana was in the form her Philadelphia Eagles jacket.

Rachel Bowie and Roberta Fiorito dived into the surprising connection between Diana and Kelly during a recent episode on Royally Obsessed. The podcasters cited the Philadelphia Enquirer to reveal that Princess Diana received the NFL's iconic merchandise following a chance meeting at Grace Kelly’s funeral.

According to reports, Kelly met Jack Edelstein, a Philadelphia Eagles statistician, as she was paying her respects for the Princess of Monaco. Edelstein later reflected on the fateful encounter, calling the princess a warm, sweet, and kind person.

Diana inquired about Edelstein's profession and asked him what the Philadelphia Eagles' team colors were. He explained that the Philadelphia Eagles' team colors were silver and green. Diana replied, "Those are my favourite colors," and it stuck in her memory.

Edelstein was inspired by their conversation and convinced Leonard Tose, the owner of the Eagles team at the time to make a bag with Eagles merchandise for the princess. That included her custom Eagles jacket.

Diana was delighted with the gift and wrote Edelstein a thank-you letter. The jacket was a staple piece in her wardrobe for many years and she continued to wear it on numerous occasions. It was even featured on the cover of Peoplemagazine.

Although it is not known where the jacket went after Diana's 1997 death, it is most likely somewhere in the possession of one of her sons. It was an iconic symbol of Diana's individuality and is still one of her most cherished pieces of clothing. It's also a piece royal history, thanks to its association with Grace Kelly.
