Cults offer equal parts terror and curiosity. The Family International, formerly known as The Children of God, is one of the most well-known. It has many well-known faces among its members.

What is 'The Family'?

David Berg founded The Family in 1968. The California cult was founded in 1968 as a hippie haven. This was quite typical at the time. Berg was a preacher who built a following before inventing his "religion". The Children of God continued expanding all the while Berg ran a child-sex ring.

The cult's legacy is haunted by infidelity and sexual assault. Deborah Berg, Berg's child, said that he had molested Faith and her sister Faith. He encouraged children to share their sex and also encouraged adults to have sex as toddlers with each other. Deborah later accused her father, who was a religious prostitutionist, of causing the cult to grow to more than 10,000 members.

After Berg's 1994 death, the pedophilic dogma was dissipated but scandals began to surface. Horror story after horror tale has been told by former members. The Family International is still around today.

Some of the most famous names

It shouldn't surprise that a group this large, especially one located in Los Angeles, would include some very famous faces. Jeremy Spencer, founder of Fleetwood Mack, quit the band to join the cult. The Family has been in the news recently due to Jeff Fortenberry, a sitting Nebraska representative lying to the FBI about his involvement with the group.

Others were also raised in the cult's walls and left the group later. People heard Rose McGowan, a Scream actress, about her escape. Her sect in Italy turned from being "really idyllic", to being dangerous, so her father fled for the United States. McGowan stated, "It was difficult assimilation." "My brothers and sisters thought everyone was boring."

Phoenix Family

The Family was the birthplace of a Hollywood dynasty. The group included the Phoenix family, River and Joaquin's brothers, throughout the 1970s. Berg started advocating incest. The family left. River stated in a 1991 interview that "they're disgusting...they're ruining peoples lives." River, who was 23 years old, died from a drug overdose.

Joaquin Phoenix would star in The Master. This film is essentially about why people feel attracted to these organizations. Although many believed the film was rooted within Scientology, it seems that Joaquin also had his family history to draw from.
