Although he would understand and respect the decision, he hopes that people will still see it this way.
Will Smith's press tour to promote "Emancipation," has started. Talk about the now-infamous Oscars slap was also part of it.
Kevin McCarthy, FOX 5 DC reporter, interviewed Smith over the weekend. McCarthy asked him to relay his message to anyone who may be hesitant about seeing the movie due to Smith's antics during the Academy Awards. Smith, of course, slapped Chris Rock after making a joke regarding Jada Pinkett Smith.
"I totally understand that. Smith replied that if someone isn't ready, I would respect that and give them the space to be unprepared. My team is my greatest concern. [Director Antoine Fuqua] What I consider his greatest work is the best of his career.
The film's cinematographer Bob Richardson was praised by him, along with Naomi Shohan, the production designer, and Francine Jamison–Tanchick, as well as costars Charmaine Baingwa, and Ben Foster. He said that everyone had "done some the most outstanding work of their entire career" on the film.
"My deepest wish is that my actions do not penalize my team." He said that at this point that's all I am working towards, and that's the goal he hopes for. "I hope that the material, power, and timeliness of this story will inspire people to recognize the amazing artists and support them.
Smith plays a man who escapes from slavery and goes North to join Union Army. The movie was inspired by "Whipped Peter", a real-life slave whose scarred back was whipped. These photos were taken at a medical exam and used by the abolitionist movements to show the horrors of slavery.
Smith will not be permitted to attend the ceremony if he is nominated. He was previously banned from all Oscar events for ten years.
Smith apologized in a long video in July for his actions at the Oscars.
He said to Chris Rock, "I'm available whenever you're ready for talk," before apologizing to Rock’s brother Tony and mother Jada as well as their children and fellow nominees.
The video ended with him stating that he was "deeply sorry" and "trying to not think of myself as part of s ---,"" while promising that he was "deeply committed and dedicated to putting light, love and joy into the world" moving forward.
"Emancipation," which will be shown in theaters and worldwide on Apple TV+, will debut on Friday, December 2, 2022.
