Here's how to make 2023 the year that you are in control of your health. Dr. Jill Zimmerman is a Charleston-based physical therapist who created the "Treat Yo’ Self" DIY at home exercise program. It provides basic tools that will help you move better.

Dr. Zimmerman recently posted an Instagram video showing a 84-year old woman named June getting up from her kneeling position to get off the ground. Dr. Zimmerman said that she can now get off the ground more easily than she could 20 years ago.

This is the best exercise if you only have time for one.

She wrote, "Get up and down on the floor multiple times per day, every day." I don't care how many times you need to get started. As time passes, I want you not to need as much support. It's the best way to get the most bang for your buck.

This movement addresses stability, mobility and strength. It also coordinates function.

When it comes to prolonging your lifespan, balance is key. Movements like these are great for helping you achieve that balance. The doctor says, "If you want to live long, this is the way."

Although it sounds easy to get up and down from a kneeling position, it takes some practice and awareness. Place padding underneath your knees and support yourself if you need it. You can do this by placing your hands on your knees or leaning on a table or chair.

Dr. Zimmerman recommends starting slowly by moving in a chair with no support. Whatever your method, you can gradually reduce the amount of support you need.

Do it every day. This simple action can add months or years to your life. It takes only a few minutes. When you reach the age of 84 you won't feel as if you were 84.
