The finale of America's most beloved game show is Final Jeopardy. This is the most exciting and suspenseful moment on the show. Monday's Final Jeopardy question featured a rare triple stumper. This meant that no contestant correctly answered the question in time. One contestant, however, suffered a worse fate than her competition, as she wrote the correct answer only seconds too late.
Vermont native Jake DeArruda was back for his second game on Monday. He played against Sam Meehan, an attorney, and Sara Howard, a Ph.D. candidate. DeArruda led the other players by a large margin, but everything was temporarily in doubt when Ken Jennings revealed the Final Jeopardy clue.
Jennings said that the word originally meant to relate to stories of suffering but now it is used to describe strong emotions of any kind.
Final Jeopardy clues can sometimes refer to something so precise that you don't even know what it is. This was one of those clues, however, that seemed almost applicable to many different answers.

Meehan, for example, seemed confident in his prediction and he bet all his winnings. Although "drama" may seem like it fits the bill, it was not the right answer. DeArruda was less confident with his answer and only bet $800 on "mortal" as his answer. This too wasn't the right answer.
Howard also initially thought "intense", which is a semi-appropriate word. Howard didn't give up on that answer. Howard wrote "pass" just seconds before the clock expired. She said that she was trying "passion" but could only remember the first four letters. She bet $1,999 to bring her score down below $1.
Jennings explained that Howard would have correctly guessed if she had more time. It was actually "passion" that answered the question, referring to Jesus Christ. Today, "passion" does not necessarily refer to suffering but can be used to describe any strong emotion.
It must have been devastating to realize that you knew the right answer, but were only seconds away from sharing it. It's a consolation that she couldn't beat DeArruda, as his final score was $25.197 and she had only $2,000 to gamble. After winning three games, the delivery driver seemed to be heading towards the Tournament of Champions roster. Then Patti Palmer surprised her by losing.
Howard wasn't completely defeated, however. After all, she had $1 left, Meehan had $0 and she took home the $2,000 prize. Although the fluke did not affect her ranking, it was still very painful. We are hoping that she is invited back to the 2023 Jeopardy! Second Chance Tournament
