The #MeToo movement, which was launched five years ago, made America and the rest of the world aware of the widespread nature of sexual violence. Celebrities founded Time's Up shortly after Alyssa Milano's Twitter post #MeToo became a huge hit. Despite the fact that the nonprofit has been involved in many advocacy and policy initiatives, it is closing down.
The organization underwent a major reset in the fall 2021 and made significant leadership changes. After former Governor Andrew Cuomo was implicated in a scandal, some of the organization's leaders were forced to make a change. The organization decided to concentrate on the Time's Up Legal Defense Fund, more than a year after the leadership changes.
Gabrielle Sulzberger (board chair) stated that the board unanimously decided to end all operations. Sulzberger acknowledged that "it was not an easy decision" but said the board unanimously decided it was the best decision and the best way to move forward.
The chair of the board stated, "Very simply. The Legal Defense Fund really reflects our core values, not just at our inception." Sulzberger said that we had just decided to return to our roots at the end. "[The fund] was our first initiative, which we funded. It remains the core of everything that we stood for."
Time's Up received $24 million to their legal fund when it was founded on January 1, 2018. This was thanks to the Golden Globes coverage that year. Time's Up now owns $1.7 million, having spent most of the money on court cases since 2018.
The legal defense fund for workers who have been sexually assaulted is administered by the National Women's Law Center, Washington, D.C. Uma Iyer (law center vice president for marketing and communications), stated that the legal fund has provided legal services to more than 4,700 workers and paid 350 of the 500 who applied for it.
Debra Katz, an employment and civil rights lawyer, praised Time's Up for moving into a new phase as the organization shifts its focus. She said that this was a testament to the power and will of the #MeToo movement, as victims of sexual violence have come forward and stated, 'We are not going to tolerate this [conflict] within the organization.'
Hopefully, the new operations will allow Time's Up (Time's Up) to offer survivors of sexual assault more life-saving legal services.
