Tristan Thompson could pay Maralee Nicks child support at a staggering amount

Tristan Thompson on the court with the Boston Celtics

After weeks of speculation, Tristan Thompson posted to Instagram to confirm that a paternity testing had revealed that he was the father of Maralee Nicks' one month-old son. After leaked texts between Thompson and Maralee Nichols were revealed, Thompson claimed that child support would not be substantial because he was technically unemployed. What amount Thompson will pay?

Thompson Will 'Amicably" Raise His Son with Nichols

Thompson posted a statement on social media saying, "Today's paternity tests reveal that I fathered Maralee Nichols." I am fully responsible for my actions. Now that I have established paternity, I look forward in amiably raising our son."

Morghan Leia Richardson was the Matrimonial Partners at Davidoff Hutcher & Citron LLP, New York City. She gave her best estimate of what Nichols might be paying each month.

Richardson stated that basic child support in California is due until the child turns 18, or 19, if the child is still in high school. She said that Thompson's million-dollar child support is the right amount for the baby, and she was open to being asked how much.

She continued, "For awards where the incomes of the parties are extremely high, like Tristan, the court will enter the numbers into the support calculation, but also consider many other factors." A larger award could be justified if the child lives in the same or similar environment in both of their homes.

What will his other children do to the payments to Nichols?

Thompson is also the father of True, his daughter with Khloe Kardashian and Prince, his son with Jordan Craig. Richardson says this could be a factor in the discussion over how much Thompson should pay Nichols.

She explained that Tristan's support for his other children will play a role in calculating the amount of support he will pay to this child. Reports indicate that Tristan's income is approximately $10mil. Based on this number and the report that he pays $40k per monthly for his son, I can run the calculator to get an estimate of $34k a month.

Richardson said that if a parent has already paid support for another child, this amount decreases the income available to support later children. Richardson said that there is a strong argument for him to pay less as he supports other children. But, it's not fair to treat this child differently. It will depend on Tristan and his legal team, and what they can show to a judge.

Richardson was asked how Thompson's retirement would impact child support payments. Richardson replied, "Sports players have limited careers, and he still has 3 young children to support." I hope everyone involved in this will make sure that the money is set aside for the children. He may seek support reduction if he becomes disabled or is unable to play.
