The incident was caught on camera and occurred right outside of a security checkpoint

On Wednesday, three people were stabbed in the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

In a press release, the Atlanta Police Department (APD), said that officers had confronted a female brandishing an axe just outside of a security checkpoint.

Authorities said that officers engaged the female and tried to convince her to drop the knife. They also worked to limit her movements and remove travelers from the vicinity. "During the encounter, the female suspect stabbed a female adult and then an APD Lieutenant as he tried to take her in custody."

APD claimed that they tackled the victim and learned of another stabbing only after they had taken her into custody.

The police said that the preliminary investigation indicated the female had been in a taxi when she stabbed the chauffeur before arriving at the airport. "Once the female arrived at the airport she exited the cab and walked to the airport. Officers found her shortly after."

APD announced at a press conference held outside the airport shortly after the incident, that a lieutenant was injured. According to the Daily Mail, the officer in question was a veteran of 71 years.

The three victims are "alert and conscious" according to the witnesses.

APD identified Damaris Milton as a 44-year-old suspect. According to APD, Milton was not injured in the incident.

Police added that investigators were working to determine the cause of the incident. "Charges have been filed, and Milton will be taken to the Clayton County Jail when charges are obtained."

Atlanta Airport released an update about X: "An accident in ATL's Domestic Terminal this afternoon is currently being cleared. The impact on operations is minimal. "There is no danger to the public."

@Atlanta_Police is investigating the incident that occurred Wednesday afternoon at ATL. The operations have returned to normal. "We thank the #APD for its professionalism and swift action."
