Gilgo Beach Murder suspect Rex Heuermann reportedly was "pretty surprised" when authorities apprehended him on the Manhattan sidewalks last week. Police made a conscious decision to arrest him far from Long Island.
Heuerman was arrested outside his office on Thursday. Heuerman is accused by police of the murder of at least three women who were found dead along Long Island’s Ocean Parkway.
ABC7 NY (below) shared a video of Heuerman's arrest by plainclothes police officers. The video shows Heuerman being followed by a group before they surround him.
Ray Tierney, Suffolk County District attorney, explained to people they arrested Heuermann outside his office as he has "92 firearm permits" and it was "safer to get him away from the house."
He also said ABC News. Authorities reportedly discovered 200-300 firearms during a home search. These were located in a walled off vault behind a metal door locked in the basement. They included pistols, rifles with semi-automatics and revolvers.
Tierney believes Heuermann "was pretty shocked" when He was arrested. He added, "He had no idea which tells us we did our jobs."
According to CNN the suspect was under 24 hour surveillance before he could be apprehended. Authorities were "concerned Heuermann" would learn about the charges against him after they presented them to the grand jury last week. Suffolk County Police Chief Rodney Harrison said to the outlet that they believed he might leave the country in order to avoid arrest.
Harrison said Heuermann’s family were "disgusted" by the accusations against him. He added, "If I ask you, I don't think they knew about this dual life Heuermann lived."
CNN also reported that Heuermann asked, "Is this in the news?" when he was brought to jail to be processed.
Heuermann is charged with six counts for the murders of Melissa Barthelemy and Megan Waterman. Amber Costello was also charged. He is being held in jail without bail and pleaded not-guilty on Friday. His next court date is August 1.
Heuermann, in addition to the three women for whom he is accused, was named as the "prime defendant" in the murder case of Maureen Brainard Barnes, the fourth woman in the Gilgo Four.
Michael Brown, speaking with NBC about his client's case, said: "I can tell you that this is a very circumstantial matter." As I spoke to my client in tears, the only thing that he said was "I didn't commit this."
