The Columbus Division of Police has launched an investigation into the incident. It claims that the video "didn't reflect" the "compassion and decency" that its officers are expected to display.
A Columbus, Ohio officer is being investigated for her conduct while responding to an emergency call about a victim of a child predator.
A man posted a TikTok video earlier this week in which he showed two police officers arriving at his house after midnight. In the caption that he added to the video, he said his daughter had been "a victim of an online predator" and "manipulated into sending photos of herself."
He added that they had dialed 9-1-1 about six hours before.
Two officers arrive at the home of the man and he tells them that his daughter has fallen asleep.
It still happened, right? The dad tells the officer that he called the police to make his daughter "realize" what happened. He said, "Reality is, there's not much that I can do, is it?"
The female officer responded, "She could get charged with child sexual abuse," she said. The father was shocked by the statement and replied: "Who can she be?" She is 11 years old."
The officer asks, "She created it right?" The officer asks again, and the father confirms the age of his child. The officer replied, "It's not important. She's still porning."
The father replies, "She's not doing that, she's just being manipulated on the Internet by an adult who is a scumbag." Before the female officer asks: "Is she even taking photos?"
The father was clearly tired and told the two, "Have a good evening, thanks for coming." You're serious? "Have a good evening."
The two walk away.
At the time this article was published, the video had been viewed more than 740K times. Comments were made criticizing the officers' actions. "This is unbelievable!!! OMG!! "Protect our children!! One viewer wrote, "You are so respectful, too." Another added, "They had no reason to react in this way."
Many viewers advised them to either report the behavior to their supervisors or to release the footage on the news.
Elaine R. Bryant , Chief of Columbus Division of Police, issued a statement on Tuesday evening in which she condemned the actions shown in the video -- and added that an investigation had been launched both into the initial sexual misconduct in response to a minor complaint as well as the behavior of the police officer.
"I expect that my officers will treat each victim of crime with dignity, compassion, and decency." What I saw on that video didn't reflect that - which is why we sent this case to the inspector general," wrote Bryant.
"I would like to be clear that this incident is not representative of the Division. Every day, our officers work tirelessly to provide comfort and justice for victims. We apologized to the father as soon as we heard about the incident and assured him that the matter would be thoroughly investigated. This included both the officer's actions and, more importantly, crimes committed against his son. As I said on my first day, when our officers do what is right, we have their back. We will hold them responsible if they do not.
Separately, a statement released by the Department confirms that the Sexual Assault Unit detectives "immediately" received the report from the officers and "have initiated an investigation."
