"She was like, ‘Get out of here!’ "She was like, 'Get out of here!'" said the actor who played Jonathan opposite Samantha Milano.
Danny Pintauro, a former star of "Who's The Boss", is speaking out about his relationship to Alyssa Milano, his ex-star on the show.
The sitcom ran from 1984 to 1992. Tony Danza starred as Tony Micelli, a housekeeper for Angela Bower, Judith Light's widowed marketing executive. Tony's young, sassy daughter Samantha was played by Milano, and Angela's precocious son Jonathan was played by Pintauro.
Pintauro, who appeared on Wednesday's episode "Behind the Velvet Rope" of Danny Yontef's podcast on Wednesday, reflected on his time as a star on "Who's the Boss," and shared that he had "iffy times" with Milano while they were on the series.
It was a wonderful experience. Pintauro, 46, said that for all those years, they really did become a family.
"We did Christmas gifts. He continued, referring to Helmond, who was Angela's sharp-tongued mother Mona. Helmond died in February 2019.
Pintauro spoke about his relationship with Milano and suggested that they were a brother-sister on screen.
He explained that he loved being there but Alyssa was a teenager and that he was the younger brother. "She was like, ‘Get out of here!’ and slammed my face with the door. It was just an older sister/younger brother thing.
Pintauro stated that they were "unable to form a relationship while filming," and Milano was the cast member he "talked the very minimum for at least 10 year" after "Who's the Boss?" ended in 1992.
Although he claimed that he and his star "never had that kind of bond", things changed when he revealed that he was HIV-positive in 2015.
Milano discovered the news while hosting an episode of "The Talk". She wept as she discussed Pintauro’s diagnosis.
Pintauro recalled that she was "totally caught off guard" to Yontef. "She had a moment of tears."
He said, "Right after the episode, I received a text message from her, so our relationship has evolved a lot since that moment."
It was announced in August 2020 that a sequel series with Milano and Danza was in development.
"I'M SO EXCITED!" Below, Milano captioned a photo from the show to her Instagram. "I have wanted to share this since so long, and now I can!" We believe the time has come to tell the story about these incredible characters. We can't wait for you to hear their stories. We are so happy.
According to Milano, the new series will pick up with Samantha, Milano's single mother. Perhaps not so coincidentally, she still lives in the house where she grew up.
Milano spoke with Entertainment Tonight last month and gave an update on the sequel series. It will premiere on Amazon Freevee.
She said that she was initially skeptical about the project. "And then, I spoke with Tony... and got really excited. I thought, "If we could put it together in a manner that really stays true the whole progressive thing that was in the '80s .... Angela was single mother raising her children, owned her own company, divorced, and lived in her backyard talking about hickeys, then she hires someone to clean her house." That was huge in the 1980s.
"If we can find a way to tap into this with today's issues, and make it... as progressive -- and I gotta say, I read that script. She revealed that there is a script and said that it was submitted to Freevee prior Thanksgiving. They are talking internally about it this week. We will hopefully hear it soon."
