Ortega spoke out about her role as Wednesday Addams in an interview with NME. Ortega spoke candidly about her relationship with her character, how it was to work with Tim Burton for a few episodes and the experience of filming a key scene while she was ill with COVID.

In previous versions of Wednesday Addams, the character was seen as a lonely individual. Netflix's Wednesday portrays Wednesday Addams in a more complex and interesting light.

Although Wednesday is a dark character and cannot attend public high school she makes friends at Nevermore Academy, her new boarding school.

She actually develops a relationship with Tyler Galpin, a "normie". Tyler is seen with Wednesday during her famous dance routine to "Goo Goo Muck."

Ortega became sick during filming of the scene. The actress said, "Yeah. I woke up and it was weird. I don't get sick often and it isn't very severe. The body was aching. It felt like I had been hit by a car. I also felt like a goblin had invaded my throat and was scratching my esophagus.

Even more concerning is the fact that Ortega was already ill. Ortega said that she was given medicine by producers while waiting for the positive COVID result.

She said that she was not feeling well and knew the scene could have been improved. Ortega said, "I asked to redo the scene but we didn’t have time." "I think it could have been done a bit better," Ortega said.

MGM sent an email to NME confirming that strict COVID protocols had been followed. Jenna was removed from the set once the positive test was confirmed.

Blaming the Wrong Person

Fans and the internet took advantage of Ortega's admission that she was sick during filming to attack the actress. Numerous social media posts contain comments criticizing Ortega for not going to work that day. Although Ortega is known as a hard worker and a talented actress, many people started to point out the problems associated with hustle culture.

Is Ortega really to blame? Our culture values producing despite suffering, sickness, grief, and other illnesses. In our society, production is the most important thing.

People are praised for the number of achievements and awards they have received. People are praised for what they do, not for who they are. Our society is proud of hustle culture.

Ortega admitted to having body aches when she woke up in the morning. Even more, it appears that Ortega was not feeling well to her crew members because she received medicine from someone else in the middle of waiting for her COVID results.

It begs the question: Did Ortega make the right decision to stay home after she woke up, or to go home once it became obvious to her crew that she was ill?

A Symptom Of A Bigger Problem

Let's take a look at it. She is only twenty-years old. She lacks the same power and cache as Tim Burton on set. Ortega was also under contract to film.

MGM also had a protocol they follow for COVID. MGM shared this information in an email to NME. It seems like Ortega was following their rules.

Let's not forget money and a production plan are at risk. Filming could be delayed and money would be lost. Ortega would need to be isolated for a time if she tests positive for COVID. This would delay production.

What was Ortega supposed do? The company had set the protocols for her to follow when filming Wednesday. Ortega was filmed for fifteen minutes to achieve the positive result by the producers.

This is a problem Americans all over face. Because they don't have the money to pay for time off, many people in our society find themselves forced to work even when they are sick.

Many people lose their job when they take sick leave. Many essential workers and low-wage workers depend on their ability to work regardless of how they feel.

Ortega is not a low-wage worker but she is a young actress and would likely have to face obstacles when competing with giants like MGM or Netflix. It's time to stop blaming the Wednesday stars.
