Will King Charles Bring Back Gaudy Tradition Of Wearing Crown At Parliament Opening After Elizabeth Stopped It? It’s Likely, Yes

The Imperial State Crown is well-known for its weight and heavyweight. In 2019, Queen Elizabeth II decided to remove the crown and instead chose a smaller tiara. Although the crown hasn't worn in many years, the monarch has worn it for many years. Will King Charles III, who will be crowned in May 2013, bring the tradition back? Most likely, yes.

Charles, his Majesty being known to keep with tradition, is expected to restore the Imperial State Crown when the State Openings are delivered by Parliament. Since the 15th century, the crown has been used to registar the monarch. The current crown was created for George VI's coronation in 1937. When the queen began her 70-year reign, the crown had to adjust for her.

The crown jewels of the royal headpiece are precisely 2,901 in number. These precious jewels include the Cullinan II, St. Edward's Sapphire and the Stuart Sapphire as well as the Black Prince's Ruby. The large crown frame is made from gold, silver and platinum. The velvet cap is also trimmed with ermine hair. The crown measures 12.4 inches high and weighs in at 2.3 pounds.

Crowns are 'Important'

The crown's weight is precisely why the late monarch stopped wearing the extravagant headpiece. The queen said that the crown was too heavy and would cause her neck to break. Crowns have their disadvantages but they are very important.

In 2019, The Sun's political commentator Kate Ferguson pointed out that the queen had stopped wearing the crown. "It's only the third time she's not worn the Imperial State Crown from 1952," Ferguson said. One person replied to Ferguson's tweet, "I think it would be even more heavy for Charles now."

The crown will likely be worn by his Majesty, even though it is quite heavy. He is a follower of tradition. The crown is worn only by the ruling monarch after being crowned. We'll have to wait to see if the crown is worn by the king following his coronation, May 6, 2023.
