"She planned to preserve the foot and display it with a sign saying 'Wear your boots children'."
Mary K. Brown, a 38-year-old Wisconsin nurse, has been accused of cutting off the frostbitten foot without permission. She then allegedly told coworkers that she planned to display the item at her family's taxidermy shop.
After an investigation into the death in Pierce County of a 62 year-old man at Spring Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center, Brown was arrested last week. After the medical examiner noticed that the man's foot was "lying beside" him, and wasn't attached -- the autopsy was ordered. Authorities began investigating the matter.

An affidavit filed recently details what happened after the man was admitted at the rehab center in March. According to NBC News, he had suffered severe frostbite to his feet from his heat going out. They were also becoming necrotic.
Other nurses claimed that his right foot was dead, foul-smelling, and held by a tendon throughout the Pierce County sheriff's investigation Pete Koch. Hospice care staff believed his death was imminent. A nurse even said that she was able "to take his foot and place it back in" during the days preceding the amputation. Another nurse described it as "black as a mummy."
According to investigators, Brown removed the foot with gauze scissors on May 27 in front of two nurses, who claimed they were present when it occurred. According to reports, she asked permission but was denied by an administrator who believed that the man was just moments from death. Brown was then reported to have gone rogue several days later.
Brown did not have a doctor's permission to perform an amputation. She claimed that she didn't have authorization to amputate VICTIMs foot. According to KSTP, Brown didn't have VICTIM permission to amputate VICTIMs foot." "Administrators at the nursing home agreed that such a procedure was not within Brown's scope of practice and that a doctor's approval was required before any amputation."
A doctor would likely have ordered the procedure, and an administrator didn't believe Brown was malicious in her intentions. Brown is quoted as saying that she was trying to improve the quality of the victim's life.

Here's where things get interesting.
According to one of the nurses present in the room, Brown was talking about epoxying the victim’s foot and taking it home. A second nurse, who was able to recall Brown's family having a taxidermy shop, said that Brown told them she would epoxy the victim's foot and take it home with her.
Brown claimed that she placed the foot in a red biohazard bags and kept it in a freezer. Although Brown said that she wanted to "take home to preserve it", it remained in the freezer until Brown died. He then took it with him to the medical examiner.
Spring Valley Health and Rehab Center released a statement saying that they would continue to cooperate fully with the investigation. The identified person is not employed in our community.
Brown refused to talk about the allegations with The Washington Post earlier in the week. Brown is due to appear in court on December 6.
