Woman Admits to Filing False Rape Report After Cheating on Spouse

Woman Admits to Filing False Rape Report After Cheating on Spouse

Renee Dawn Skoglund was caught on surveillance video buying the rope that she claimed to be tied with in Walmart. Prosecutors claim she lied so she could get a STD test for free.

Authorities say a South Dakota woman pleaded guilty to filing a false report with the police after she claimed that she was raped by a man in Florida.

Renee Dawn Skoglund, 30, was arrested in Sioux Falls in March 2010, just two days after reporting the first sexual assault she experienced in Hillsborough County.

Skoglund has been charged with fabricating false evidence, false reporting of a crime and misuse of the 911 emergency system.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has released the audio from Skoglund's 911 call, in which she told dispatchers that her car had broken down and that she pulled off to the side on I-75. She claimed a male attacker had bound her with a rope, pulled a cloth on her head and raped in the car.

Skoglund described the rope that was used in the alleged assault, and authorities discovered it is sold in Walmart stores around the area.

The local police searched Walmarts in the area and found surveillance footage showing Skoglund purchasing the rope that she described in her report.

Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office released a statement saying that detectives found video evidence from several places where Mrs. Skoglund was in the days surrounding the attack. This contradicted her original statements. "[Skoglund] tried to change her statement before finally admitting that she fabricated the entire incident."

According to FOX 13 Tampa Bay, authorities believe Skoglund fabricated the rape to obtain a free STD screening. She was married when the incident occurred.

Jessica Couvertier, the prosecutor in court, said that "she had consenting sexual relations with a person in Hillsborough County." She felt guilty because of her marital situation, and wanted to be checked for a sexually transmissible disease.

Sheriff Chad Chronister stated in a May press release that "This case is truly depressing." There are too many victims who have to deal with trauma of this kind. This woman abused our 911 emergency number and diverted attention away from victims who needed the resources available to them in these investigation scenarios.

FOX 13 reported that Skoglund received a sentence of two years community control (a kind of house arrest), and eight years of probation. Skoglund also owes $17,245.26 to the sheriff’s office for the resources used in filing a false report.
