Ring camera footage shows a man matched to the suspect's description holding an axe at the time of the murder.
Police say that a Connecticut mother of three was killed this week by her ex-husband, against whom she had a restraining or order just days before.
Julie Minogue, 40, was found dead at her Milford home on December 6, after her 17-year old son called police reporting that his mother had been assaulted inside the home. Later, he told police that he heard a male screaming and ran downstairs to see a man with an axe in the hand, standing over Julie Minogue.
According to reports, the teen ran upstairs and locked himself in his bedroom before running out of fear.
The suspect fled the scene by the time police arrived. Court documents (via FOX61), stated that an axe was discovered near Minogue's victim. Minogue's 3-year old son was also at home at the time.
Ring footage taken by a neighbor, via the New Haven Register, shows Minogue carrying an axe around the time of his murder. According to police, the description of the man in the video matches that of Dewitt.
The suspect's mother called the police to report that he had called her and confessed to having killed his girlfriend. Witnesses saw Dewitt and he was taken into custody inside a food truck.
Dewitt was charged with Murder, Criminal Violation of a Criminal Protective Order Standing, Criminal Violation of a Retraining Order, Risk of Injuries and Reckless Endangerment. He is currently being held on $5 Million bond.
Milford Police confirmed that Dewitt was previously taken into custody in November 2019 by Milford Police for assaulting Minogue. Minogue was then issued a protective order by the court. Minogue claimed that Dewitt was harassing her via text messages and she was then given a no contact order by police.
FOX61 reported that her complaint stated, "I don’t believe I should be subjected o this abuse anymore." I am afraid for my safety and that of my children. Ewen has been in a lot trouble with drugs, alcohol, and I fear he will kill me.
Alanna Paul, Assistant State Attorney for the District of Columbia claimed that Dewitt confessed during his arraignment.
"Even without this, I would argue the case against defendant is very strong. Surveillance footage is available. A 17-year old witness is available to this incident. Prosecutors added that it was a serious case and warranted a very severe bond.
According to reports, Dewitt's lawyer requested a bond of only $500,000 because of "mental health concerns" about his client. He also stated that Dewitt is a Marine Corps veteran. A suicide watch has been put on Dewitt, and a hearing is scheduled for December 14.
