The "hoarder house" was previously searched by police. They found a "sewer-like" smell but no body.

A suicide was ruled for the death of a man found dead in his closet eight months after he had been reported missing.

Richard Maedge, 53 years old, from Illinois, disappeared in April 2022, a day after he told his wife Jennifer that he was returning home early from work. She later found his keys, wallet, and car at the house.

FOX59 reports that police raided the home, with the coroner stating that authorities had described it as a hoarder's residence. They found a sewer-like smell but no bodies. According to the Bellevue News Democrat, neighbors and mailman noticed the bad smell.

Jennifer reported that the smell was still there. Police searched the house again and found no evidence of sewer gas. A plumber claimed it to be sewer gas. The smell disappeared.

Richard was not seen for almost eight months. Jennifer then went to look for Christmas decorations. Richard's body was found in a closet under a staircase. The coroner stated that his body was found in a "mummified condition" with no other injuries or suspected foul play.

Richard's family now criticizes the local police for not finding him sooner.

"Mistakes were made and I want to know why." His sister said that if it means filing a complaint, and going all the the way to the governor. "I am not going away. I am just beginning to speak louder. I should have screamed from the start, but the police claimed they were looking for him and that they were just doing their job.

Jennifer said that police would not have known there was a hidden closet when they searched the house.
