Sometimes, the advice and trends you find on TikTok are dangerous or ineffective. Dry scooping became a popular pre-workout technique in the past year.

Dry scooping refers to the act of scooping out a small amount of pre-workout powder, and then chasing it with water. This is in contrast to the original intention of mixing the powder with water and drinking the result. Although it's not new, dry scooping became more popular on social media in 2021 when more people shared their experiences with dry scooping.

Is Dry Scooping Dangerous?

Briatney Portillo, a twenty-year-old Briatney, discovered dry scooping on TikTok. She decided to give it another try but quickly regretted it. She shared her experiences with dry scooping in a video.

She wrote, "Taking a dry preworkout scoop [because] it was trending on TikTok," over a photo that featured a rainbow clown face filter. "I ended up in the hospital after a heart attack."

BuzzFeed reported that Portillo felt a "heavy feeling in her chest" after trying dry scooping. She also experienced a "slight pain" but it wasn't severe. Portillo continued to work as an exotic dancer. Portillo stated that she started sweating more even though she was wearing a bikini. Her chest pain intensified.

Portillo reported that the pain was felt in her back, left arm, and left arm. She knew these were signs of a heart attack and called 911.

Portillo revealed in her TikTok comments that she had suffered from non-ST segmental elevation myocardial injury (NSTEMI). According to the Cleveland Clinic an NSTEMI can be described as a temporary or partial blockage in blood flow to the heart.

She said, "I don't have any heart conditions but I still get messed up."

The Professionals Weigh in

Dry scooping a preworkout powder allows you to get a concentrated boost of energy before exercising. This will allow you to train harder and longer. However, there are some risks.

Dr. Kathryn Boling, a primary care physician at Baltimore Mercy Medical Center, told Health that there is a clear risk of choking. Dehydration is another risk, which can be detrimental to dry scooping. Inhaling powdered powder can lead to aspiration pneumonia.

The concentrated dose of caffeine is the greatest problem. Dr. Boling stated that if you dry-scoop a powder with a lot of caffeine, it is not good for your heart.

Others agreed that "mainlining too much caffeine" is something you should avoid. Dr. Nicole Harkin, a cardiacologist, told Health dry-scooping highly caffeinated preworkout powders "could definitely be detrimental to your body by increasing heart rate and blood pressure acutely."

What's the bottom line? Dr. Boling stated, "Don't do that."
