Woody, however, says that McConaughey's stakes in a DNA test are higher. "I mean, it feels like McConaughey is losing a father."
Woody Harrelson shares his thoughts about the wildpossibility of him and Matthew McConaughey being related.
The actor, who appeared on "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert" episode Tuesday, reacted in a shocking way to the recent comments made by his "True Detective' co-star. He revealed that they might be half-brothers.
Harrelson told Colbert that McConaughey had a point. "We talked to Ma Mac (Matthew's mother) and she said one time - it's crazy, but we were in Greece. I was watching the U.S. win the World Cup and, I don't remember, I said something about regrets. I told her, "You know, you have to admit that it is odd that my dad has no regrets." "I've known Ma Mac for a very long time and she says, 'I... knew... your father.
Harrelson continued, "It was ellipses that I found to be a little troubling and/or interesting." "'I know your father.'
Harrelson replied, "Filled" with innuendo, to which Colbert joked that it was "perhaps a pregnant pause."
Harrelson continued to say that McConaughey’s birthday and the fact that Mary McConaughey, the actor’s mother, "knew" Harrelson’s father, adds to the likelihood of them being half-brothers.
He said that "the year of his conception, nine months earlier," "she had taken a break from her relationship with Jim, his alleged father."
Harrelson continued, "The important thing is that we want to test. For him, this is a bigger deal. He feels like he is losing his father. "No, you are gaining a new father and brother.
McConaughey made his comments just one week after he first hinted that he might be related to Harrelson.
McConaughey was talking to Kelly Ripa, the host of SiriusXM's "Let's Talk Off Camera", about his friendship with Harrelson. But things took a surprising turn when McConaughey began mentioning their long-standing relationship.
He said, "You know, I've always had a blurry line between where I begin and where my partner ends. And where we both start and end has been a constant murky line." "And that's a part of our bromance right?"
He said that their families might be confused for years about which one of them was in the picture. Then, a comment made by his mother during a vacation to Greece led him and Harrelson on an investigation.
McConaughey explained: "In Greece, a few year ago, my mother was there and she said, 'Woody I knew your father'." It's the way McConaughey said it that matters, it seems.
He said that everyone knew about the ellipses my mother left after "knew". It was a loaded K.N.E.W.
McConaughey and Harrelson began to weigh the weight of the word. They did some quick math and personal history research. McConaughey said they "found that [Harrelson’s] father was on furlough during the time my mom and dad went through their second divorce."
He continued, "There are also possible receipts or places in West Texas, where there may have been a meeting or gathering or a knew' moment." They haven't taken it further.
McConaughey said to Ripa, as Harrelson did in his interview with Colbert: "We've talked about DNA tests, but it is a different situation between us and Harrelson."
McConaughey said, "It is a little more difficult for me, because he wants me to take the chance of saying, 'Wait, you are trying to tell my dad that he may not be my father after 53 years believing this?'".
He said, "This is where we are now." McConaughey's bigger stake will make it clear that this project is waiting to see if McConaughey decides to act and realign his family understanding.
McConaughey, Harrelson and Apple TV+ are working together on another project: "Brother from Another Mother", in which the actors will play fictionalized versions themselves.
The new half-hour show -- which comes after they worked together on "Welcome to Hollywood," EdTV," "Surfer, Dude,"and "True Detective," -- is all about the family, with the laughter and conflicts that arise when they try to get their families to live on McConaughey’s ranch in Texas.
David West Read, the creator of "Brother from Another Mother", will produce 10 episodes. McConaughey will star in the series and Harrelson executive produce. The release date is still unknown.
