Woody Harrelson is one the most prominent "SNL" hosts on a night full of big laughs and head-scratching moments - plus, the Five-Timers Club!
This was a very strange and mixed episode on Saturday Night Live. Woody Harrelson added his chameleonic charm and humor to some of the season’s most hilarious moments and some that left us scratching out.
It was his fifth hosting gig, and the Five-Timers Club was addressed in the opening monologue. This was undoubtedly one of the most bizarre and jarring parts of the entire night. Woody was still open to taking on any challenge, no matter how silly or serious, even if it meant he had to mock "The Whale"!
Courteney Cox Transforms Into a 'Gen Z Girl' In Hilarious Makeover Video
This episode was a tribute to two men who had died since the last one. A very cool blueprint showing the layout of Studio 8H was displayed before Eugene Lee, the production designer, died on February 6. A shot of Richard Belzer (who worked on the show in the 1970s) was shown before the closing credits.
Although we enjoyed "SNL's" attempt to be more absurd with this episode, it wasn't too surprising that it was not a great show. You might have a different opinion on weird humor than ours. It is a bit of a mystery, however, as to why an episode celebrating the strange didn't have Sarah Sherman.
We'll rank all sketches from worst-to-first, as usual. This includes the Monologue, Cold Open and "Weekend Update", as well any sketches that were not cut due to time constraints but found their way online. We will not include musical guests because they aren't usually funny -- except Ashlee Simpson. We end with a look back at the cast member who had the best week.

Monologue: Woody Harrelson
Wow! Woody's whole political commentary that ended in him declaring he was purple fell flat with the audience. Although he didn't explicitly state that meant, it was a punchline. But what a joke! He quickly got on with his Five-Timers Club membership, with a funny moment when he didn’t get a jacket. It is always disappointing to see a five-timer moment without pomp and circumstance. Overall, Woody did not work well with this crowd, despite some funny and amusing moments.
He spoke over their attempts at cheering at "True Detective", but came across as a bit shouty throughout. This didn't make them feel at ease. They were won over by him putting the spotlight upon his manager Jeremy. He purportedly transported his weed to NY from LA and nearly lost them all again with all his asides, and a rambling tale that would never end. "There is still no jacket." Yeah, Woody, we're disappointed, too. This would have made for an enjoyable monologue.
Stay tuned for the final credits to this episode to see the Five-Timers situation. ( spoiler Alert: Woody finally gets the scoop after Kenan gives Jack White a jacket).
Trump talks Train in Cold Open
Although it was a bit long, we still enjoy the random nonsense that James Austin Johnson (pregnant RIhanna) spews about Trump. They were super-topical in that he visited East Palestine, the site of the toxic train derailment. But they also cast Chloe Fineman, a thoroughly unhinged Emily Kohrs. She clearly enjoyed her moment in the spotlight. It was a lot of fun to be the foreperson on the grand jury investigating Trump. But JAJ was the real highlight. Although the overall cold opening was slow, we did learn a few gems, such as, "What are your plans eating dirt?" Do not eat the dirt! They'll elect anyone. That was my idea.

Submarine
This sketch had a call and repeat element that was enjoyable, but it was a strange way to explore the exploration of online polls which led to very, very stupid names for objects. The Internet can bring out the worst of people, or at least a complete lack of seriousness. Woody Harrelson's shouts at his men about how the submarine got its name, "Mr. Dingleberry’s Goochballoon adfjkl ; 6969" were quite funny. However, we aren't sure if it was just a bit odd. Perhaps if someone shouted the question at me.
The Hippo
This is a strange response to Brendan Fraser’s "The Whale", featuring Woody Harrelson, who was an actor who gained literally 450 pounds in order to play the title role... but the movie was canceled almost immediately by the studio. The other actors had a lot of fun comparing their frustrations with growing beards or dying their hair to Fraser's having gained 450lbs in six months. We have to admit, even though Fraser was outraged about his "fatsuit" appearance in the movie, Woody's "fatsuit" is a great way to laugh at it. It reveals a lot about the consequences of what he did, such as not being able to see his penis or developing "triabetes."
Beautiful Gym
"This gym should be called a James. It is classy!" This sketch was 10-to-1. It was very bizarre. Woody Harrelson, Bowen Yang and Sarah Sherman brought out great character as the two suitors who exercise with gold weights in an upper-class gym. It could not have been more effective. Their flirting was adorable and totally out of touch with reality. Sarah Sherman, Bowen's "gym crush", was a literal gym rat. This sketch's theme was "There's nothing too bizarre that's not too far." It was more bizarre than funny but still entertaining thanks to the excellent performance by its leads.
Please don't destroy: The stakeout
This piece is a great example of how things escalate as Ben Marshall attempts to understand why Martin Herlihy, John Higgins and John Higgins continue to bail on him. Woody Harrelson's randomness with helping him with his stakeout (ready and waiting to kill them at one time, but it's 2015 at the other) only adds to their absurd charm. Although it seemed like they were just having a laugh with John and Martin, we appreciated the idea that they had a secret life and family they didn't tell Ben about. The performances were well executed and the premise funny enough, we're just not sure how to feel about the two-men-kissing-for-a-laugh trope. Although there was more to the piece, it was still used for its "shock" effect.
Prison Call
It's the same character Ego Nawodim plays all the time. But we loved her guard's interjections as well as talking over Woody Harrelson, who was trying to communicate with Chloe Bennett on the jail phones. She lost it when he promised to buy her house. Although her rant was understandable, things became more absurd when we switched sides. It was Kenan Thompson's guard who went down a rabbit hole regarding Chucky (yes, that killer doll). Although the ending was quite funny, the guards took over the phone conversation. Although it was an original and entertaining premise, it lost some of its humor when Kenan added his half.
Weekend Update
Colin Jost, Michael Che, and Michael Gue made a funny dig about Biden’s response to the train crash. They compared it to the Chinese balloon. But it wasn't enough to mock Trump for being in East Palestine and drinking Trump Water at people. They had a lot of fun exploring all this and then they went into the Oscars "crisis group" (in case it happens again). "I'm sure that you wish it would happen again for ratings." Jost's promos for Oscars were fantastic. It was like a WWE lineup.

James Austin Johnson is another nonsense-rambling character, but we loved Bill Walton's maniacal energy as NBA commentator. He was open to the strangeness of sports fans... and he enjoyed the word. It was funny that he was calling a "live" game starting next Wednesday. But it would have been more effective if he focused on something else. Maybe calling a past game or switching sports. It was still a great debut for James, and it was an interesting way to view sports.
Che is a great comedian and loves to get a laugh from his audience. He got one for telling the truth about the WNBA's lower salaries while also talking about Britney Griner being signed. He was able to laugh even more at his next joke about the Brooklyn alligator. After that joke, he even waved. The audience was ready for Michael Che's segment on Harvey Weinstein, R. Kelly and "What Did They Even do Wrong?" They were even more successful when they touched upon race later. Che declared, "I don’t know, but I love this audience." This is great for me!" We love it when we ride the edge like that, too, I'm sure! "You're gonna get me killed!" Jost said to Che once.
This was quite a disturbed character. Heidi Gardner was a mother of five, four doctors, and a questionable son who could have robbed her. It was said that her love for her sons is reflected in her willingness to support her daughters' success, but she often puts them down. This is a commentary on how society values boys more than girls. It's quite effective in this regard, but it got to a strange place. Let's just say that it's not your mother, or.
Jennifer Stone went on a date with Austin Butler But he didn't know it?
Slingshot
Kenan Thompson delivered one of the best sketch performances he has ever given. We were literally dying when he left us on this ride. It was hilarious to see him come in and out of consciousness during the extreme ride. As he rode alongside Woody Harrelson we laughed so much. But when he returned to the saddle with Ego Nwodim it was his confessions and the passing out that really took it to the next level. This simple idea is enhanced by a strong performance.
Cologuard
This colon cancer screening product's vagueness is great for an ad spoof. Woody Harrelson is amazing as the guy trying figure it all out. The talking boxes trying to persuade him to "unleash" the inside of them was a great gag. It made it creepy, creepy, and a kind of sexual perversion. Although "SNL" is known for their sloppy endings, this episode was even more hilarious than the others. This was truly a delightful episode, from start to finish. It even made more with the ending.
PLAYER OF THOUGHT
Woody is such an outstanding performer, that we can now say for the first time in a long time that it felt like Woody dominated the show. A few cast members were reduced to supporting roles, and Punkie Johnson was not included in any of the smaller roles. Only James Austin Johnson and Kenan Thompson had more than one role, so we had no choice but to focus on supporting roles.
This one seems almost obvious when you consider the entire night. Kenan was energized and had fun working with Woody. He performed one of his most hilarious performances as a Slingshot rider, who keeps falling asleep. He was great in this subtle comedy.
His solid work, which made us curious as the UPS driver in Cologuard's commercial, his dedication to his role as a prison guard (even though we didn't like the content of his lines), and all the other things he did, make this the night that makes us appreciate why he is such a reliable performer. He didn't fall, he expanded his work and felt that he was pushing himself to be a performer.
