Zachery Ty Bryan Addresses Domestic Violence Arrest and His 'Issue with Drinking'

The actor explains why he copied Armie's divorce notice when he split from his wife, and he also denies claims that he lured others into a cryptocurrency scam.

Zachery Ty Bryan, star of Home Improvement and more than two-and-a-half years after he was charged with felony suffocation and arrested in the case. He shares his side of the tale.

Bryan was arrested and charged in Oregon with felony coercion and strangulation, as well several misdemeanors, including harassment, following an incident involving him and his girlfriend Johnnie. At the time, Cartwright reportedly reported to police that he was physically abusive. She claimed he slapped and punched her before choking.

In a plea agreement the felony charges were dropped and he was sentenced to three years of probation. During this time he also had to attend a batterers' intervention program. Since that incident, Cartwright and Bryan have gotten engaged and welcomed three children. Bryan told The Hollywood Reporter in an in-depth article that they are "good friends" now.

Cartwright declined to comment on the piece, as noted in the article.

He claimed that Cartwright was upset that they were dating while he still had his ex-wife Carly Matros. He said that they had "drunk too much" on the night of the incident.

We didn't get physical at all. We were really loud. We were screaming, and everyone could hear us because we lived in a townhouse with [thin walls]. Johnnie, at that time, was just very upset by my situation," said he. "At the very end, the police will throw you a lot of counts because they want you to plead guilty." I could have fought it, but that would have added more stress and drama. "I got two misdemeanors, and I called it a night."

He called it a "learning opportunity" and a wake-up call. He said he "definitely has an issue with alcohol" but did not call himself an alcoholic. He said, "I just disengaged from alcohol." "I tried to stay away," he added. I have my routine and I don't go out to get lit. This takes away many problems.

Bryan, 41 explained in the same article why he copied Armie Hammer's announcement of divorce almost word-for-word when he revealed he and ex wife were separating by 2020.

"I didn't know what to say and he went through the exact same thing that I did. "I don't know Armie, but I remember thinking his statement was perfectly stated, probably written by an publicist. So I thought, Let's go," he said.

He said that while married to Matros, he "was not being a faithful wife" and he wasn't being his best self. "I thought that I could go out, do what I wanted, and have fun. Then I would come home to be a good father with my children. It's not the way real life works."

He also addressed allegations that he had tricked other people into a cryptocurrency scam after claiming to have made millions by investing in Bitcoin. He said he wasn't running a shady scheme or anything -- that was just not him. He told the publication he "was in the same boat" with his investors.
