Educational television is a matter of fact today, but before 1969, it didn't really exist. "Sesame Street," which premiered that year, was a group of TV producers' proof of concept that television could actually educate children. And calling it successful would be an understatement.

An estimated 86 million Americans have watched the show, and it earned 209 Emmy awards in its first 50 years on the air. A huge factor in that success is that watching "Sesame Street" isn't just informative; it's fun. That's due in no small part to the performers who bring these unforgettable characters to life. Given their iconic status, it can be hard to think of the people behind the "Sesame Street" characters are human beings, but they are, and we've lost a few.
