Tyler Perry entered the American movie industry via a very non-traditional path. He found success, largely, playing self-created characters that lovingly poked fun at the shared experiences of the Black community. Beneath the wigs and makeup, Perry was different in other ways. A victim of horrific childhood abuse, homelessness, and racism, Perry nonetheless achieved real success in the entertainment mainstream, and is now a billionaire, accomplished actor even outside of the Madea franchise, and successful studio head.
