Zayn Malik said, "I felt like I didn't have control over other things in my life. But food was one thing I could control."
Many men are also affected by disordered eating. While women often speak out about it in Hollywood, many men have the same problems. Although it is not often discussed, eating disorders affect millions of men. According to the National Eating Disorders Association, 10 million males are affected at some point. Disordered eating comes in many forms but they are all harmful to both the body and mind. It's important that public figures share their recovery stories to let other men know it is possible.
These men have spoken out about their battle with disordered food eating.
1. Jordan Fisher
Jordan Fisher has recently revealed that he struggled with an eating problem. He said he was first diagnosed when his wife was expecting their son. He struggled behind the scenes despite always wanting to become a father and knowing that he would be "taking on the biggest and most important project" of his lifetime. Jordan claims that he didn't know he was suffering from an eating disorder, but he lost 30 pounds during this time.
"I didn't know that my childhood traumas were causing me problems eating. I just thought I had reflux. Jordan told Drew Barrymore that it's "insane" and that now that Jordan has "gone through that desert," he is "so stronger."
2. Zayn Malik
Zayn Malik admits that he suffered from an eating disorder while he was in One Direction. Zayn Malik says that he now realizes how sick he was when he looks back on old photos. Zayn says that he didn't restrict his eating because he wanted to look good, but rather to have control over something in his own life. He says that his struggle played a role in his decision to leave 1D, and put his mental health first.
I was suffering from an eating disorder. I didn't have any weight concerns or anything of the sort. I would go days, sometimes even two or three straight without eating. Zayn writes in his autobiography that it got serious. "At the time, I didn't realize how bad it was," he wrote. "I think that it was all about control. I felt like I was powerless over everything else, but I knew I could control my food. I was so thin that I became ill. "The pressures of the band, the work load and the speed of the tour combined with my poor eating habits."
3. Dennis Quaid
Dennis Quaid had to shed 40 pounds in order to play Doc Holliday, the character he played in "Wyatt Earp" (1994). Dennis Quaid struggled with body image problems after filming ended. Dennis, who was so thin but still perceived himself as being heavier, ended up checking into a treatment facility.
He told Best Life that his arms were "so skinny" that he couldn't get himself out of the pool. "I would look in the reflection and see a 180-pound man, even though I weighed 138 pounds. "I was obsessed for many years with what I ate, how many calories were in it, and how much I would have to exercise."
4. Elton John
Elton John battled addiction and bulimia in the early 1990s. Elton John admits to being "paranoid about his weight" for six years. "But unable to stop eating." He would eat large meals, then purge and repeat the process. Elton admits that he worked incredibly hard in order to overcome his addictions.
Elton said to Variety, "It wasn't something that happened overnight." "I changed, but it took a lot of hard work." "I worked just as hard to become an addict as I did in order to change and make myself into a good person."
5. Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran says that after he learned about his friend Elton’s struggle with disordered food, he "realized that I was doing what Elton describes in his book - gorging and then it would keep coming up again." Ed Sheeran still calls himself "a binge eater" but he has tried to channel those tendencies in other areas of his life. He is a "binge dad," and also a "binge-exerciser."
"I feel uncomfortable talking about certain things as a male. It's important to be open about it, even though I know that people will react in a certain way. "Because so many people hide the same thing," he told Rolling Stone.
6. Russell Brand
Russell Brand says that as a teenager he suffered from a variety of mental health problems, including disordered eating and drug addiction. Russell Brand was diagnosed with bulimia at the age of 14. He has overcome this eating disorder, but still struggles from time to time.

7. Caleb Followill
Caleb Followill, a teenage boy from New York City, says that he suffered from anorexia. Caleb Followill's eating disorder was a result of low self-esteem and feeling "not good enough." "I want to appear as if I am able to defend myself." Caleb stated in an issue Q that he wanted a man to see him in a pub and know he couldn't run me over or talk shit at me, although he could.
8. Eminem

He admits that he got addicted to exercising and counting calories to the point of hurting himself. Eminem now says that he only does exercises that are healthy and do not overwork his body.
"I have an addict's mind, and I think that when it comes to running, I got a bit carried away. I turned into a f---ing Hamster. I ran 17 miles on the treadmill every day. In the morning I would run 8 and a 1/2 miles before going to the studio. Eminem wrote about this in an article for Men's Journal. "I became OCD with the calories and made sure to burn 2,000 each day. In the end I lost about 149 pounds. "I ran until I got injured"
