"From your head to your tips of your toes, we only have one body. Let us all ensure that ours is in top shape."
Millions of people worldwide suffer from polycystic-ovary syndrome (or PCOS), including 5 million in the United States. This condition can cause excess body hair, weight gain, and problems with fertility. Although there is no cure, PCOS can be managed and treated with medication and lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise.
Many people are struggling with PCOS and celebrities have opened up about their experiences. Many of these celebrities have success stories that will hopefully inspire other women who are struggling with PCOS.
These celebs have their opinions on PCOS diagnosis.
1. Nikki Bella
Nikki Bella revealed that she was diagnosed as having PCOS just before she became pregnant. She shared that her doctors had told her previously that she would need assistance in conceiving a baby and that she had even started to talk about freezing her eggs. Nikki and Artem Chigvintsev, her husband, decided to try it on their own. They were successful in getting pregnant the first attempt.
"I visit the doctor and find that I have high testosterone and low estrogen, and I also have PCOS. They said that I would probably need help if I wanted to have children. I was having discussions about freezing my eggs. It was Halloween day, or so, and Artem Chigvintsev, me, had unprotected sexual relations for two nights straight. I'm not sure how I can get pregnant. She said, "I need help," while talking about unexpectedly becoming pregnant on an episode.
2. Lea Michele
Lea Michele says that her PCOS diagnosis made a big difference in her life. Although she acknowledges that side effects can be severe, such as weight gain or skin problems, Lea says that her main method of managing her condition is through diet changes.
"Yes. "Yes. That was the end of it. It was all possible because of my diet. However, I feel very lucky. Women have more severe forms of PCOS than I do. My PCOS is less extreme. Health spoke out about why she has not spoken up, as there are more severe cases."
3. Romee Strijd
Romee Strijd, Victoria's Secret model, was diagnosed with PCOS seven years after she stopped having menstrual cycles for seven years. She said that she was concerned about her ability to have children after learning of the condition. Romee was able to manage her condition through exercise and a diet plan and is now ready to have her second child.
"I began to research PCOS, and I came to the conclusion my PCOS was not typical. My body was always in fight or flight mode, which meant my body was constantly stressed. My life was not one of stress, so I didn't feel it. However, I did travel a lot (no biorhythm), exercised every day, and ate very clean (strict foods). Romee shared her thoughts on Instagram: "I think I pressured [my body] too much. And honestly, every body is different. But I believe my weight was not healthy for my body to function properly. I couldn't handle constant traveling...I'm so happy to report that I got back my period last november."
4. Daisy Ridley
Daisy Ridley, then 15, revealed in 2016 that she had been diagnosed as having endometriosis at age 15. However, her pain didn't stop immediately after she was diagnosed and her skin continued to get worse. She was diagnosed with PCOS after eight years of waiting and numerous doctor visits.
To anyone who is suffering from anything, see a doctor, pay for a specialist, get your hormones tested and allergy testing done. Keep an eye on your body, don't be afraid to sound hypochondriac. Daisy shared her thoughts in an Instagram post that has since been deleted.
5. Sasha Pieterse
Sasha Pieterse, actress in "Pretty Little Liars", says that she noticed something was wrong with her body when she was a teenager. She began to search for answers after experiencing irregular periods and unexpectedly gaining 70 lbs. After visiting many gynecologists, it was recommended that she see an endocrinologist. This helped her to diagnose PCOS.
There are many symptoms, such as irregular periods, weight gain and impossible to lose weight, that can sometimes seem normal depending on your lifestyle. But, I feel like it is important to get checked. PCOS can cause ovarian cancer, breast cancer, and other thyroid problems that could have been prevented. It affects more than half of all women, and many don't know it. People reported that it is a major issue and she wanted to help anyone who might be affected.
6. Keke Palmer
Keke Palmer was her advocate when she was diagnosed with PCOS. After years of struggling with acne, and trying many treatments, she realized that there had to be an underlying condition. After seeing several doctors, she was still not able to get a diagnosis. She then looked into her family history. With more information, a doctor finally diagnosed her.
"It took ME to look at my family, which has a history with diabetes and obesity, in order to understand what was actually happening to me. I don't have a medical degree, but I did the research and presented what I learned to a doctor. That led to a proper diagnosis. Keke shared the following Instagram message: "I'm not saying you can trust web MD for everything. But I am saying that no one can help you like we can."
7. Jaime King
Jaime King struggled for many years to get her PCOS diagnosis. She tried to get pregnant through five rounds in vitro fertilization and 26 rounds of intrauterine injections. She also had five miscarriages. All of this eventually led to her being diagnosed by a doctor. Jaime now wants to help other women after the tireless efforts of her doctor to suppress the condition. Jaime recently joined Allara as an investor and director for impact. Allara is a chronic care platform that offers comprehensive virtual care including consultations with dieticians for women with PCOS.
Jaime stated that "when I realized how isolated and how painfully and horrendous it was, and how badly the health care system was, I was like, there has to be something changed here."
8. Jillian Michaels
Jillian Michaels, a teenager, was diagnosed with PCOS after a cyst ruptured on one of her ovaries. Birth control can be helpful, but she decided not to use it. She ended up having another cyst burst at 21. She began to research the condition and hormonal imbalances. She made lifestyle changes that dramatically improved her life after she realized the root cause was insulin resistance.
"No fake sugars, processed sugars or grains, as these can drive insulin up the roof. The situation was under control over time. In the past 20 years, I have not had a problem. It is about eating right, exercising, and eating clean. Yahoo! reported that a lot of chemicals in food can cause problems for your hormones.
9. Victoria Beckham
Victoria Beckham was diagnosed as having PCOS when she tried to conceive her fourth baby. Despite the fertility treatments that helped Victoria to conceive Harper, she admits that it was difficult to get pregnant. The fashion designer shared her experience and said that it was difficult to do all of this in public.
"Everytime I go out, someone asks me if I'm pregnant. At first, I tried to avoid these questions by giving vague answers and smiling, but I now speak bluntly and brutally. "I smile big and tell them, "Actually, my infertility is due to my PCOS. My husband and I have gone through many fertility treatments," she said.
