The YouTube/Instagram star revealed to her fans that fear kept her online longer than she wanted.
Acacia Kersey announced that she will quit social media following a "immense amount" of damage from her role in influencer.
The 23-year old online star, who began racking up followers in seventh grade on Tumblr, resurfaced on Instagram on Tuesday to announce that she will be moving on indefinitely.
"There are many reasons that have led me to this decision," she wrote. She also included a photo of Jairus Kersey, her husband, and their three children, Brinley Rosie Cali.
"This role has caused a lot of damage to my relationships, financial stability, and my outlook on the world. Fear has kept me here longer than I can admit. Fear of what might happen if I stopped earning money, fear about what I could offer the world, and fear of who I would be without this.
She continued to state that she was exhausted on all fronts and felt like she was running out of gas. She added, "I couldn't operate like that for very long." "I spent most of my life in a place that I did not want and made many decisions that I wouldn't repeat."
Acacia was a teenager when she used her Tumblr fame for YouTube and Instagram success. She gained 800,000 subscribers and 2,000,000 fans, respectively. She was also criticized by many for her online success, including those who called her fame-hungry and said she was too obsessed with dating.
The controversy followed, with Acacia apologizing in 2020 for her racist tweets. She was also accused of animal abuse for having rehomed multiple pets over the years. Acacia had previously defended herself, saying that her allergies and special needs were the reason she gave them up.
Acacia stated that she now wants to be able to spend more time with her family and find a stable job. Acacia has also started a small side-business to keep her creative juices flowing since she returned to Oregon. She added, "Our lifestyle, relationships and spending habits, goals... practically everything that we knew has changed."
Acacia called the decision to unplug one the "hardest" and "easiest" decisions she'd ever made. However, Acacia did not rule out the possibility of returning to social media.
"Maybe I'll find my way back one day, but I won't rely on social networks for my family's survival. It created too much unhealthy pressure and privilege. It's time for us to move on. Many, many kisses. Signing off. Signing off.
